The Harmful Effects of Social media

Social Media has Several harmful effects on individuals and society, Including negative effects

on individuals and society, including negative impacts on mental health, social interactions and

more. Social media has been associated with increased levels of anxiety, Depression and low

self-esteem Most of the time it is due to fear of missing out. In the non-virtual world it is

estimated that people talk about themselves around 30 to 40 of the time. However social media

is all about showing off ones life and accomplishments so people talk about themselves a

staggering 80% of the time. Lacking strong social connections can pose a serious risk to your

mental and emotional health, Social media can also cause sleep disturbances through various

mechanisms. While social media may connect people it can also create a false sense of in

person connection, Social media has a great impact on body image as it promotes unrealistic

standards. Social media has a negative impact on people's lives including mental health, Self

confidence, Relationships and how they act in society

Lacking social Connections can pose a serious risk to our mental and emotional health.

In today's world many rely on social media platforms such as facebook, twitter, snapchat,

youtube and instagram to connect with others. While it has benefits it's important to remember

that social media can never be a replacement for in person relationships and connections. When

everyone uses social media, I think this is how we all communicate. No one uses real word

communication. Social media use just as the use of drugs and alcohol can hijack the

dopaminergic pathways more quickly and reliably than naturally derived rewards such as

studying hard and getting a good grade. Studying hard and getting good grades is slower to

access the rewards system. While checking social media causes dopamine rush the more you

prioritize social media interaction over in-person relationships, the more you’re at risk for

developing or exacerbating mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. It can cause serious

mood disorders, individuals very on virtual interaction more than face to face connections.

Lacking strong connections can pose serious risk to your mental and emotional health

Social media can cause sleep disturbances through mechanisms. It signals to our bodies

to wind down and prepare for sleep. The blue light emitted by mobile phones affects your

melatonin levels more than any other wavelength does. It signals to your brain that it's daylight,

melatonin production is suppressed and sleep becomes delayed. In 2012, only 5% of adults were

using social media; this had shot up to 70% at the last count (2020) and it’s even higher in

younger adults, at over 90%. Theres also been big increases in howlong we spend on social

media amongst 16-64 year olds. A study from 2012 found that young people spend 54% of their

internet time on social media. 10 In teenagers, the fear of missing out and social disapproval are

driving forces in the use of social media at night time. If you're not connected then your missing

out if everybody is online why aren't you . That blue emitted light by electronic devices before

bedtime will suppress the production of melatonin.

Addiction and being alone can have serious consequences for a person's mental,

emotional and physical well being. Social media addiction is the fact that the reward centers of

the brain are most active when people are talking about themselves. In the non-virtual world, it’s

estimated that people talk about themselves around 30 to 40% of the time. Social is all about

showing off one's lives and accomplishments so people talk about themselves more than you

think Overuse of social networking sites is much more problematic in children and young adults

because their brains and social skills are still developing. Research has shown that adolescents

who habitually use social media from a young age have severely stunted social interaction skills

A study performed by California State University found that individuals that visited any social

media site at least 58 times per week were 3 times more likely to feel socially isolated and

depressed compared to those who used social media fewer than 9 times per week. We rely on

these devices to where we are killing to see the next thing out, This addiction can cause serious

problems such as anxiety, depression and various mood disorders

Social media has a significant impact on body image, as it promotes unrealistic beauty

standards and can lead to negative body image perceptions, social media can make just about

anyone feel like they don’t measure up, but it’s even more detrimental for people with eating or

body-image disorders, Body dysmorphia is a serious condition as it effects 1 in 50 people in the

US. Research shows that sexual minority men experience elevated rates of psychiatric disorders

for which body dissatisfaction is a central component, including eating disorder and BDD. A

surveyTrusted Source of 2,733 sexual minority men found a pattern of associations between:

social media use and body dissatisfaction eating disorder symptoms thoughts about using

anabolic steroids. If you have a supportive environment that engages in positive self talk. You

will enhance your overall self esteem

In conclusion to conclude the harmful effects of social media do play a big role on

one's individual health. Social media has played a huge role in the youth. The impact of

social media is a growing concern and can harm. its benefits, it’s important to remember

that social media can never be a replacement for real-world human connection. The blue

light emitted by mobile phones affects your melatonin levels more than any other

wavelength does In the non-virtual world, it’s estimated that people talk about themselves

around 30 to 40% of the time. Social media has a negative impact on a lot of people's

lives, including mental health, self-confidence, relationships, and how they act in society.
