CHAPTER 1: THE NATURE OF CAPITALISM IN THE USA (PAGE 98-101)

Unit 1: What is capitalism? (READ page 98)


 Capitalism is an ideology (a set of ideas that are used to support a belief system) about the economy
works.
o Some of its features include:
 People need freedom
 When people complete against each other, they achieve greater things
 Some people have more than others do, because they make better use of their abilities.
 Government should not interfere with the economy
 Private ownership of the economy, and profits for individuals.
 Capitalist ideology stresses that there should be a Free Market (an economic system in which the
government does not control how businesses operate and make their profits)
o The belief is that people will work harder if they can make more money and keep it.
 The term ‘capital’ in this context means money is used to buy or invest (to put your money into a
business in the hope that the business will do well and you will get a share of the profit it makes) in
land, mines, factories and businesses (factors of production).
 The role and most important function of a government is to protect the rights of individuals
 USA became the most powerful capitalist country in the world after WW1
