Why Students Missing Out from School

There are many reasons why students miss a lot of school. Childs said the lung condition of
asthma; obesity, or being extremely overweight; and dental problems are the leading physical
causes. Since the pandemic, mental health problems also have increased.

There may also be community and neighborhood problems that play a part in attendance,
Childs said. Certain conditions also can affect attendance. These include whether a student
has safe transportation to and from school or whether the school itself is a safe environment.
Childs added that if families do not feel connected with the school community or do not value
education that can add to absenteeism

Being absent from class can have negative consequences on a student's academic
achievement and long-term educational attainment. Studies have shown that school absences
are associated with lower educational attainment, a greater likelihood of non-employment,
and a reduced probability of on-time graduation and enrolling in college
Absences in middle and high school have been found to harm student achievement, with
missing 10 classes resulting in reduced test scores and course grades [4]. Additionally, there is
a negative correlation between class attendance and academic performance, indicating that
higher absenteeism rates are associated with lower GPAs [5]. These findings highlight the
importance of addressing school absenteeism to promote educational success and career
opportunities for students .
