ACTIVITY 1
DEVELOP (PAGE 57-58)

1. When planning for a test, what should you do first?

When planning for a test, first and foremost, you should be able to identify the intended

learning outcomes in a course. These learning outcomes are knowledge, skills, attitudes, and

values that evry student should develop throughout the course.

2. Are all objectives of instruction measured by a pen-and-paper-test?

No. Because some objectives are measured through performance based or oral presentation.

3. When constructing a TOS where objectives are set without classifying them according

to their cognitive behavior, what format do you use?

When constructing a TOS where objectives are set without classifying them according to

their cognitive behavior, we use the One-Way TOS.

4. If you designed a two-way TOS for your test, what does this format have?

A two-way TOS reflects not only the content, time spent, and number of items but also the

levels of cognitive behavior targeted per test content based on the theory behind cognitive

testing.

5. Why would one consider a three-way TOS than the other formats?

A three-way TOS advantage is that it challenges the test writer to classify objectives based

on the theory behind the assessment. It also shows the variability of thinking skills targeted

by the test.

Setting Test Objectives

Why Define?

We need to define the test objectives because it serves as the basis for evaluating the

effectiveness of the teaching and the learning process determined through testing or

assessment.

How to set?

Test objectives are set based on levels of complexity and specificity of the cognitive

behaviors..

What are levels of thinking skills?

The six levels of thinking skills are knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis,

synthesis, and evaluation.

Creating Table of Specifications

Why create?

TOS is created tomaps out the test objectives, contents or topics covered by the test, the

levels of cognitive behavior to be measured, the distribution of items, number, placement,

and weights of test items and the test format.

How to create?

Creating TOS begins with determining the objectives for the test, the coverage of the test, the

number of items for the whole test, the number of items per topic and calculating the weight

for each topic.

What are the types?

The types of TOS are One-Way TOS, Two-Way TOS and the Three-Way TOS.

1. What factors should be considered when choosing a particular test format?

When choosing a particular test format, you should know the objectives or desired

learning outcomes and the level of thinking to be assessed.

2. What are the major categories and formats of traditional tests?

The major categories and formats of traditional tests are: Selected Response Test which

includes the Multiple Choice, True or false and identification, the Constructed-Response

Test which includes the Short Answer, Essay and problem solving test.

3. When are the following traditional tests appropriate to use?

 Multiple Choice- are short and sharp which means that more of them can be posed

in a test situation to give a student a more thorough examination of how much

they understand about a given subject.

 Matching-type test- to measure the student's ability to connect words, complete

sentences, or pair words with their definition

 True or False Test- use to check your knowledge of facts.

 Short answer test- use when you want to have clearly-defined answer

 Essay test- use when you want to improve the higher cognitive skills of students.

 Problem-solving test- use to know the knowledge and skills of learners in

mathematical concepts and procedures.

4. How should the items for the above traditional tests be constructed?

Traditional Test Types

What are the types?

The types are: Selected Response Test which includes the Multiple Choice, True or false

and identification, the Constructed-Response Test which includes the Short Answer,

Essay and problem solving test.

When to use?

These tests are used to know the knowledge and skills learned by the students.

Why choose it?

To assessed the level of thinking of the learners.

How to construct?

Construct it by using several questions related to the topic and objectives of the course.
