TECHNICAL REPORT 3

Bolted joints

Consider the bolted joint between a piston and a piston rod in an hydraulic cylinder in figure with
the following data:
 variable fluid pressure from 0 to 5.5 MPa;
 minimum pressure at the contact piston-piston rod , required to perform a sealing function:
10 MPa;
 surface roughness at the contact piston-piston rod 0.8 m;
 tightening by an indicating torque wrench

Choose the screw and perform the calculation according to the outline in the next page.

CALCULATION OUTLINE
1. Calculate the maximum external load on the bolt from FA =
the maximum pressure value and the piston area.

2. Calculate the minimum required clamp load, below FKerf 

which the operation is not safe, considering the
minimum required pressure at the contact piston-
piston rod.
3. Choose a bolt class (8.8 is suggested), if FA is the
FA
external load estimate the bolt minimum area Amin by A min  3  4 
the empirical equation. R p 0 ,2
4. Chose a bolt from the table below with cross section
at minor diameter Ad3>Amin.
5. Calculate the maximum force FM,max after assembly 0.9R p 0,2  A S

µG=0,08. 1  3k 2
6. Calculate the assembly torsion moment MA to reach
a value of the tensile assembly force in the bolt MA 
FM= FM,max (slide 81 chapt. 1).

10. Calculate the loss of clamping force due to loss of FS 
interference i for vibration and fretting (slide 106-
107 chapt. 1)..
11. Assuming the tightening uncertainty factor A=2, FK,min 
