Student-Journalists unexcused in class; Teacher Explains

Student-journalists of Lorenzo S. Sarmiento Sr. National High School complained teachers for the
consecutive recorded absents in class despite their right to be excused.

“During one of the faculty meetings, we created a memorandum that was signed regarding
giving full support to students representing our school in any competition, as a result, it is out of my
memory that there would be any disregard for compliance because we all agreed”, Sir Felixberto L.
Leray, School Principal III of LSSSNHS asserted.

Students-participants continued raising their concerns about the issue to further defend their
rights as a student.

“Student writers are devoted in bringing their utmost best for the schools honor and denying
them of unwavering support will lead to a world that is not peaceful but silent,” Marco Antonio M.
Bugabil, one of the student-journalist stated.

On the other hand, Teacher A explained her side about the constantly unexcused classes of
some student-participants in the said events.

“On my side, I give special quizzes to determine whether the students have learned the topics
taught in my subject, thus, if they participate in such events, they must take responsibility for balancing
academic and non-academic activities, especially since extracurricular activities no longer carry any
points in the current grading system,” Teacher A emphasized.

In spite of the fact, Sir Leray stressed the need to adhere on the memorandum legalized with
the consent of teachers and shall not be disregard as a part of their agreement.

“As a part of the policies implemented and assented, I hereby employ this, right and just,” Sir
Leray added.

As a result, School Principal III of LSSSNHS planned to call for a meeting to further clarify the
matter with the school teachers, however, if they resist, the office will let them decide whether to
discontinue their participation in any school competitions and refrain from bringing delegates to such
events.
