ESSAY - housing for young people

TASKS
1. Brainstorm ideas
2. Read the model essay on WB page 82 and compare the ideas (complete your list of
ideas with ideas from the text)
3. Underline in the model essay:
- LINKING WORDS & CONNECTORS
- CONDITIONALS
- COMPLEX VOCABULARY
4. Write your own essay, trying to use as many elements from the model text as
possible. (Imitate the model essay as much as possible, from memory, without
looking at it while writing. After completing the essay, compare your text with the
model given and see the differences.)

The difficulty for young people to find suitable accommodation has been increasing during
these past years. The only available flats are out of their budget, in bad conditions, and
commuting time is really high. The combination of these factors make young people move to
the outskirts. This places additional pressure in them, and this is because they are trying to
finish their education or enter the working market.

One option to try to fix this problem is to enlarge the time teenagers live with their parents:
generating a financial incentive , such as a government grant, people in their twenties will
feel more motivated to apply this. However, as working and studying opportunities in a
foreign country or in a different city are really restricted, they don’t have another alternative
to stay at their parents' home. This compellation favours this idea.

Perhaps, a more feasible strategy would be the planification and construction of new
apartments near the city centre. The housing would have to be affordable for the biggest part
of the youth. We could imitate the structure of the apartment complexes, which are simple
but comfortable and available in many cities. The construction would be made on vacant
loads and this way the government will be generating employment and housing
accommodations, at the same time as they are bringing fresh life to some run-down areas.
The location of this complex would be the closest possible to colleges and workplaces, but
they would provide low prices.

These types of initiatives and programs would be truly beneficial for the wider society, and
would help to solve the existing housing shortage. For all these reasons the authorities
should support and encourage this kind of actions.
