Advanced Reinforced Concrete Structures (23MCE04)

Assignment 2: Submission by 06 Dec 22

Short Answer Questions:

1. Contrast the differences between Limit Analysis and Elastic analysis.

2. For a given slab compare the analyses methods and design outcomes for various types of slabs
such as flat slab, waffle slab and two-way slab. Which method would be the most economical?
3. Differentiate between static and dynamic methods of wind load calculation.
4. Tabulate the differences in analysis as carried out by DDM and EFM for flat slabs.
5. Suggest locations where moment distribution can be carried out, what are the safeguards?
6. Differentiate the method of shear design in corbels, deep beams, flat slabs and 2 way slabs.
7. What is gust loading, elaborate the method of evaluation of lateral loads.
8. Differentiate between the loading configurations for limit state of collapse and limit state of
serviceability. What are the limits of deflection indicated in the code for various structural
members.

Numericals:

1. Evaluate the BM envelope as permitted by IS 456 for a two span simply supported beam
2
carrying a UDL ‘w’ kN/m with max span moment of 9𝑤𝑙 ⁄128 and mid-support moments of
𝑤𝑙 2⁄ . Determine the points of inflexion as per elastic and limit analysis. Draw the BM envelope
8
and suggest the BM to be adopted so as to limit congestion at the supports.

2. Design a grid slab for an auditorium, assume suitable dimensions and loading pattern, adopt
M25 Grade concrete, Fe 415 steel.

3. An underground basement is to be considered for parking in a mall, adopting suitable

dimensions and loading as per IS875 Part I, II design a flat slab without beams adopting suitable
column sizes, drops and capital as required.

4. Evaluate the wind load for a tall building of size 30mx40m and height 60 m located in Mumbai
on level terrain, for a design return period of 50 years. Evaluate the risk, terrain & topography to
compute the design wind speed and wind pressure.
