120. THEORY OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES

Dec.) (Time: 3 Hours

Maximum: 100 Marks

Answer any ALL questions.

All questions carry equal marks.

UNIT - I
1. (a) Explain ductility, strength and serviceability criteria of concrete structures.
(b) Discuss CEB and IS code provisions for ductility and flexure of concrete structures.
(OR)
2. (a) Name the factors on which the strength of concrete depends and explain them in
detail.
(b) Name the important factors influencing the fatigue strength of concrete and explain
them.
UNIT - II
3. A reinforced concrete 230 mm wide and 400 mm effective depth is subjected to a shear
force of 120 kN at the supports. The tensile reinforcement at the support is 0.5 percent.
Find the spacing of 10 mm diameter 2 legged stirrups to resist the shearing stress at
supports for M20 grade concrete. Use HYSD bars. Also, determine the minimum shear
reinforcement at the mid-span of the beam.
(OR)
4. (a) Explain working stress method under flexures and shear.
(b) Explain how torsion is resisted in concrete members in Working Stress Method.

UNIT - III
5. (a) Explain Limit State Design Philosophy.
(b) Find the moment of resistance of a singly reinforced concrete beam section of
230 mm width and 400 mm effective depth, reinforced with 8 mild steel bars of
20 mm diameter. Use M20 grade concrete. Adopt IS code limit state design.
(OR)
6. (a) Draw typical stress strain curve for concrete and steel in Limit State Method.
(b) Define Partial safety factors. Why is it important in design philosophy?
UNIT – IV
7. (a) Explain moment redistribution method with an example.
(b) A three span continuous beam of uniform section is subjected to UDL of 20 kN/m
throughout the span. Two extreme ends are simply supported. Each span is 3.5 m.
Calculate the collapse moment of the beam using Baker’s method.
(OR)
8. (a) Derive moment – curvature relationship.
(b) A continuous beam ABCD covers three consecutive spans AB, BC and CD of
lengths
4 m each carrying UDL of 50 kN/m throughout. The ends A and D are simply
supported. Determine the collapse moment of the beam using Cambridge method.
UNIT - V
9. Design a simply supported rectangular slab of 6.3 x 4.2 m length and width to support
respectively a service live load of 5 kN/m 2. Assume M20 concrete and grade I steel.
Assume load factors as per IS code.
(OR)
10. (a) Describe Hillerborg’s strip method.
(b) Explain yield line theory of circular slabs.
