This document discusses the design of various welded joints. It begins by classifying welding processes as either liquid state fusion welding where the base metals are melted and filler material can be added, or solid state welding where mechanical force is applied to deform the materials plastically and bonds are formed through molecular interaction. It then describes several types of welded joints including lap joints, axially loaded unsymmetrical welded sections, eccentrically loaded welded joints, and cantilever welded joints. It provides examples of each type of joint and calculates required weld sizes and stresses based on given load and stress limit conditions.

A welded joint is a permanent joint which is obtained joining two parts by heating to a suitable temperature, with or without the application of pressure and with or without the application of filler material. The welding processes may be broadly classified into the following two groups: 1) Liquid state (fusion) welding where heat is added to the base metals until they melt. Added metal (filler material) may also be supplied. Upon cooling strong joint is formed. 2) Solid state welding: Here mechanical force is applied until materials deform to plastic state. Bonds are then formed through molecular interaction. Types of Welded Joints Lap(Fillet) Joint : 1. A plate 75 mm wide and 12.5 mm thick is joined with another plate by a single transverse weld and a double parallel fillet weld as shown in Fig. The maximum tensile and shear stresses are 70 MPa and 56 MPa respectively. Find the length of each parallel fillet weld, if the joint is subjected to both static and fatigue loading . Axially Loaded Unsymmetrical Welded Sections 2. A 200 × 150 × 10 mm angle is to be welded to a steel plate by fillet welds as shown in Fig. 10.21. If the angle is subjected to a static load of 200 kN, find the length of weld at the top and bottom. The allowable shear stress for static loading may be taken as 75 MPa. Eccentrically Loaded Welded Joints 3. A 50 mm diameter solid shaft is welded to a flat plate as shown in Fig. If the size of the weld is 15 mm, find the maximum normal and shear stress in the weld. 4. A rectangular cross-section bar is welded to a support by means of fillet welds as shown in Fig. Determine the size of the welds, if the permissible shear stress in the weld is limited to 75 MPa . 5. A bracket carrying a load of 15 kN is to be welded as shown in Fig.Find the size of weld required if the allowable shear stress is not to exceed 80 MPa 6. A rectangular steel plate is welded as a cantilever to a vertical column and supports a single concentrated load P, as shown in Fig. Determine the weld size if shear stress in the same is not to exceed 140 MPa.
