1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: [5]
A Tool for Emotional Wellbeing
(1) It is said that the ingredients to master any language are just four - listening, speaking, reading
and writing. We all listen and speak. Reading and writing, though, are not as common because
most students miss out on these two important skills, they find it difficult to express themselves.
To bring back the habit of reading and writing and to help them improve their language, why not
adopt an inexpensive tool – journaling?

(2) Journaling is one of the easiest and cheapest hobbies in terms of

monetary investments but its rewards are countless. One simply needs a
pen, a diary and the world to interact with. Whether it’s one’s routine, a
travelogue for a movie experience, expressing gratitude or reminiscing
about a childhood. Anything worth your fancy and imagination can be
recorded.

(3) Why not develop habit of investing just five minutes into the exercise so that our mind does
not carry clutter? It weeds out the unnecessary. It enhances creativity and develops and elevates
our diction.

(4) Psychiatrists, the world over, have started prescribing journaling as a way to good mental
health. Whatever haunts your mind, whether it is fear, hurt, apprehension, premonition or
conjecture, when written, relieves the worries and anxieties and leaves the mind in a good
working condition. It certainly boosts your mind. Journaling when done with gratitude will not
only make us happy but will also keep us in good humour. There are countless blessings, from

DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL

getting mother’s love and father’s affection to getting meals in a day. Good clothes to wear and
good school to attend. What if one was born in a refugee camp or in a war-torn country?

(5) Journaling works to develop rational and analytical thinking. The mind starts using the left
side of the brain as well. Good analysis develops a grasp over a subject and equips us better to
take up challenges. In the process we come face to face with our innate strengths and weaknesses,
the areas where we need to work upon. It improves the working memory and keeps depression at
bay. One begins to enjoy solitude which in itself a positive attribute.

ii) You may attempt any section at a time.
iii) All questions of that particular section must be attempted in the correct order.

SECTION – A
1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: [8]
(1) There are few things more endearing than lazy summers spent with family, and a new pup.
Our pup Scissors was a welcome addition to the family. My brother was
thrilled to bits. But the puppy, on being displaced from its mother, would
cry pitiably. My brother was deeply moved and did his utmost to make
him feel secured by sharing his bed and quilt.
(2) Scissors, a Pomeranian, had a thick snow-white fur, a lovable face and a
twitching nose- with which he sniffed all around his new home. His eyes
had a sparkle and shone in the dark. My mother gave him a nutritious diet
of eggs, chapatis, milk, rice and dalia. The pup soon grew up. He learnt to sit, shake hands, skip
the rope and respond to the sound of the chain, which meant that much-loved evening walk. But,
much to our dismay, Scissors hardly ever barked.
(3) My father was posted at Pathankot. On our summer vacation, we took our pup along. Taking
Scissors by train was quite problematic. The railway authorities put up many points of objection.
We were all very apprehensive but somehow, we reached Pathankot. On reaching the Air Force
Unit, we discovered that our Father too had kept a dog named Lucy- a jet black stray dog he had
adopted. Scissors, on seeing Lucy was quite taken in. He acted as if Lucy was his mother. Lucy in
turn, treated him like his own progeny. The two were inseparable.
(4) One fine day, we heard a loud bird’s call. It was a shrill voice. We rushed outside to find it was
actually Scissors’ first bark! Lucy had taught him to bark! After that Scissors kept on barking
delighted by his newly-acquired skill. We were elated.
(5) As Scissors matured, his bark became fierce and authoritative. No stray cow or pig could pass
our house unnoticed. Scissors would bark himself hoarse. He reigned over us; our house came to
be identified as Scissors’ House for 15 years.

2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: [7]
(1) Looking for a fun Earth Day activity? You may want to try
plogging, or picking up litter while jogging. Odd as it may sound,
the new "sport" is becoming extremely popular with runners
worldwide, many of whom are posting images of themselves and
friends holding bags of trash on social media.

(2) Derived from the word jogging and "plocka upp," the Swedish
phrase for pick up, plogging is the brainchild of Erik Alström. In
2016, after moving to Stockholm from a small ski community in northern Sweden, Alström
became increasingly agitated at the amount of trash on the road during his daily bike ride to work.
"I was shocked by the amount of junk there was in nature," he said. "The same debris could
remain on the road for several weeks without anyone picking it up, so I started picking it up. It
felt good to clean up even a small place."

(3) Other joggers soon joined Alström, and, by the end of 2016, the activity became so popular that
official "plogging" events began sprouting up all across Sweden. As #plogging became popular on
social media, the new "sport" soon spread worldwide.

(4) The official online "Plogga" group now boasts members from over 40 countries. Many school
running clubs are also getting in on the action, posting photographs of themselves after going
plogging together, or staging competitions that reward the runner with the heaviest trash bag.

(5) As it turns out, plogging is not just beneficial for the environment; it is also a more efficient
way to exercise. An average person burns about 288 calories while plogging for half an hour. This
is about 50 calories more than he/she would burn when just jogging. Additionally, the constant
squatting to pick up litter increases the plogger's flexibility, while carrying around the
increasingly heavy garbage bag helps strengthen arm muscles.
(6) This Earth Day, be sure to strap on your running shoes, grab a trash bag or two, and go
plogging. Or better still, start a plogging team at school, or around your neighborhood, and make
every day Earth Day!

1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: [5]
The simple way this Japanese town has become nearly zero-waste!
(1) At times, separating trash between paper and plastic can be
time-consuming but it's nothing compared to the recycling efforts
of residents in Kamikatsu, a small city in south western Japan. They
sort their garbage into 34 separate categories of waste. Residents
sort their trash into super-specific categories, like aluminum cans,
steel cans, paper cartons and paper flyers.

(2) In 2003, the city embarked on a rigorous zero-waste programme. The city used to burn its
trash, but eventually realised how damaging it was to the environment. This process released vast
quantities of greenhouse gases and toxins that could damage the food supply. The residents of the
town took some time to adjust to the tedious task of washing, sorting, and bringing their trash to
the town's sorting centre. This process is now a routine.

(3) The town also has a store where people can leave clothing or furniture they don't want,
exchanging their old stuff for free items that others have dropped off. Down the street, there's a
factory where local women make products from discarded products, like teddy bears from old
kimonos. “We are trying to focus more and totally change our lifestyles,” said Akira Sakano,
Deputy Chief Officer of the Zero Waste Academy, a non-profit organization that works towards
Kamikatsu's sustainability goals. Now 80% garbage of the town is recycled, reused, or composted,

Page 1of 4
DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL

with the rest going to a landfill. The process saves the city a third of its former costs from waste
incineration. By 2020, Kamikatsu hopes to be completely zero-waste.

(4) Globally, the amount of trash produced is growing faster than the rate of urbanization,
according to a 2015 World Bank report. By 2025, the organisation estimates that 1.4 billion more
people will live in cities worldwide, with each person producing about 3 pounds of waste per day
- more than double the current average.

Skywriting
(1)If you've ever seen an air show, you may have seen airplanes creating messages in the sky with
what look like clouds. Are these contrails (a trail of condensed water from an aircraft or rocket at
high altitude, seen as a white streak against the sky)? Not exactly…. it’s ‘skywriting’

(2)Skywriting is the process of using a small aircraft, able to expel special smoke during flight, to
fly in certain patterns that create writing readable by someone on the
ground. The smoke machines of the small aircraft usually consist of
pressurized containers full of oil. At a pilot's command, the machines
spray oil onto the plane's hot exhaust system, where it burns quickly and
creates clouds of dense white smoke. Pilots have to learn how to fly
special patterns and work the smoke machine carefully to be able to
create their unique messages in the sky.

(3)The message is often a lighthearted phrase, a generally meaningless greeting, or an

advertisement aimed at everyone in the vicinity, a general public display of celebration or
goodwill, or a personal message such as birthday wish.

(4)The first recorded use of skywriting for advertising purposes was over the Derby at Epsom
Downs Racecourse in the United Kingdom in May 1922, when Royal Air Force Captain Cyril
Turner wrote "Daily Mail" above the track. In the United States, the first use of skywriting in
advertising followed on November 28, 1922, over New York City during a visit of Savage and
Cyril Turner. Skywriting goes way back. There are reports of successful skywriters before World
War I, possibly as early as 1915. Today, skywriters take advantage of satellite navigation to
programme messages before flight, thereby increasing accuracy.

(5)Writing a message across the sky with an aircraft towing a banner is another form of
skywriting. This form has been popular in the United States for decades. Usually practised in

coastal areas where the aircraft is free to fly unobstructed at low level past crowded beaches.
Banner Towing has also been a very popular way to write special anniversary message.

Make These Small Changes to Stay Healthy

(1)When it comes to most aspects of our lives, we tend to
overlook the smaller things and focus on the bigger ones instead.
This attitude even carries over to our health. We have the
tendency to ignore the tiny things that are affecting our health
and only pay attention when something big comes up. But it
doesn’t always work that way. The smaller things we’re ignoring
could add up and be the cause of the big problem, which is something you would’ve been able to
stop much earlier, had you paid attention. So, in an effort to be more cautious of the little things
that are messing with your health, here are five things you should pay attention to:

(2)People who go to sleep late tend to be more stressed out than those who are early sleepers.
Those of you who go to bed post-midnight are more susceptible to suffer from negative and
stressful thoughts, which in turn, will delay you from sleeping even longer. And the stress,
coupled with the lack of sleep, can mess with your body in the long run.

(3)For a lot of people, the commute to college or work can span over an hour or so. And
unfortunately, such long commutes daily can adversely affect your health. You are more prone to
fatigue and exhaustion, stress and other health issues. While there’s not much we can do about
this one unless a location change is somehow possible it is important to take this aspect into
account when you cannot pin point where all your stresses come from.

(4)Possibly the worst thing we’re all doing to our body is constantly consuming processed foods,
which causes weight gain, messes up your blood sugar and immune system, and can cause heart
diseases. So try and avoid them as much as you can.

(5)Whether you’re extreme dieting or exercising like a maniac, in your urge to get fitter, you might
actually be putting your body at risk. Quite often, when one gets caught up with fitness and
dieting, they tend to push themselves too hard. And this not only results in stress, it can affect
your mood, cause fatigue and stop your body from functioning properly. [Source: Times of India]
