that today allow wireless networks to adapt to ever-changing variables, such as location, signal
strength and interference that is intrinsic to untethered electronic systems. A report on the issue, with

you have to ask yourself what’s best for the company.” For her that calculus led to the difficult
decision to resign her position as chief technology officer. Her work on adaptive wireless
communications established a comprehensive theoretical underpinning for adaptive modulation and

Goldsmith turned things around. Her own early path gave no indication that she would eventually

Most of our stories published before 2015 are no longer available online. Goldsmith's first year at

What have been the experiences of novelists who have provided narratives that question accepted

working for a defense industry startup in Silicon Valley as a new graduate in the mid-’80s, so this
was not new territory for her. But, there are manytechnical challenges that must be overcome in order
to make this vision areality, Professor Goldsmith said. In this talk, Professor Goldsmith introduced
the prospectof novel wireless technologies, some of the innovations and breakthroughs thatare
required to realize this vision. But what really tempted her to become an entrepreneur was a strong
desire to see if her academic research in adaptive modulation and multi-antenna technology could
actually translate to a commercial product. Her most recent book is Invented Lives, a novel of exile
