him out of the picture given his lineage and all,
but from the start this has all been about picking
a Sght with Whitebeard.

Naaa...sengoku already said the reason why

they are willing to go to war against WB by
executing ace. It's already been said before the
war even started. WB is grooming ace to be
the new PK and carry the new era, and to stop
that marines are publicly executing ace to give
a warning even going against WB.

The major disadvantage of the World

Government is that, while their overall power is
greater than any Yonkou, their obligation to
secure their territory (basically the whole world)
means they constantly have to spread their
forces out pretty much everywhere. The
Whitebeard pirates have no territory other than a
handful of islands that they don't protect so
much as avenge if attacked. Because of this, any
war fought between the world government and
Whitebeard would be a disaster for the
government. The WG would constantly have their
bases, countries, and ships attacked without any
reliable way to bring Whitebeards forces into
open battle with their main force. And all the
while they have the majority of their military is
pulled together to Sght Whitebeard, everywhere
else on the planet is going to Snd itself under
assault by whatever pirate crew or rebel army
want's to take advantage of the situation. The
marines would probably win eventually, but the
collateral damage would be catastrophic.

Knowing that, consider the position the WG was

in. They had Ace who was a D, the son of the
former Pirate King, a rapidly advancing rookie,
and the man who was almost certainly going to
inherit an Emperor's entire military force when
that ailing Emperor died. They needed to take
him out, but if they killed or imprisoned him then
Whitebeard would declare open war and the
above scenario would play out. The only option
the government had to deal with Ace was to kill
him in way that forced Whitebeard to engage in a
single decisive battle at a place of the world
government's choosing. That way they minimize
the length of time their military is consolidated to
a single area and maximize the casualties
in\icted on the opposing site within that short
timeframe.

They need Ace dead and they needed to make

sure that his crew was too crippled to launch a
campaign of revenge for him. A relatively rushed
public execution at their most defendable
stronghold was the best play the marines could
have made.
