Adding on
This activity will help your child to add two numbers by counting on in 1s from the larger number.

You will need the cards at the bottom of this sheet and some raisins.
 Place the cards face down in two piles: 1-digit numbers
in one pile and 2-digit numbers in the other.
 Take turns to pick up one card from each pile.
 Add the two numbers together.
 Say the number sentence aloud and write down the answer.
 After each player has had a turn, the person with the
larger answer wins a raisin!

To add the two numbers: put the larger number in your head (for example 36). Show the
smaller number using your fingers (for example 3). Count on from the larger number,
folding down one finger as you say each number (thirty-seven, thirty-eight, thirty-nine). Say
the number sentence like this: thirty-six add three equals thirty-nine.

If you have time try writing four additions as number sentences.

An example is 36 + 3 = 39.
