Lab # 18

Aim: To find the center of gravity in an irregularly shaped object.

Apparatus\ Materials:

1. Irregularly shaped piece of cardboard

2. Stand and clamp
3. Plumb line

Method:

1. The cardboard was hung in a hole from the clamp and the plumb line was attached to the
clamp.
2. A line was drawn across the cardboard when the string hangs
3. The process was repeated by hanging the cardboard to a second hole.
Discussion

Gravity is an invisible force that pulls objects towards each other, it is a non-contact force. The
Centre of gravity is acting through a single point in an object. The center of gravity or Centre of
mass of a body is the point through which the body is considered to act. For irregular bodies the
center of gravity can be located using a balancing method. To find the Centre of gravity of an
irregular object you must move from one end of the cardboard to the other end and where each
lines meet is where you will find the Centre of gravity, there were three lines labelled A, B and
C. The point of intersection of two curves is significant in that it is the point where two curves
take on the same valve.

Source of error:
1. Moving the cardboard can give you a negative result.

Precautions:

1. Be cautious around the needle

Reflection:

The center of gravity can be used in everyday life, for example when constructors must make a
seesaw in a children's park and a weight balance.

Conclusion:

To conclude, the point of intersection of all three lines gives the Centre of gravity of the
irregularly shaped object.
