INTRODUCTION
The word Sneha is derived from Snih Dhatu and NUMBER GUNAS
suffix Lyut Pratyaya. The word 'Snih' has two 1 GURU
meanings Snih Preetau to render affection and Snih 2 SHEETA
Snehane means to render lubrication. In the context of 3 SARA
Snehana Chikitsa, the meaning of the term Sneha is 4 SNIGDHA
substance that brings oiliness or unctuousness, 5 MANDHA
fattiness, greasiness, lubrication. Snehana is the 6 SUKSHMA
procedure which imparts oiliness or unctuousness to 7 MRIDU
the body1. Sneha is described as the essence of 8 DRAVA
Purusha as in Snehasaroayam Purusha Pranascha 9 PICCHILA
Snehabuyishta2. Snehana Karma can acts as a
Poorvakarma and Pradhana Karma according to the GURU GUNA
administration. It is one Upakrama under Shadvidha Substance having Brihmane Sakthi-ability to stouten
Karmas. It acts upon the body by its specific Gunas. the body Attributes of Guru Guna are
GUNAS OF SNEHANA DRAVYAS  Sadakrit-produces fatiguness in the body
Acharya Vagbhata has mentioned 8 Gunas3 and  Upalepakrit-produces mala & kapha in the body
Acharya Caraka has mentioned 9 Gunas4 for
Snehana Dravyas.  Balakrit-strengthens the body
 Tarpanakrit-nourishes the body

 Brihmanakrit-increases the body weight5  Sneha enters into minute channels easily to

 Moorcha harana-regaining of consciousness of DRAVA GUNA
patient  Contributes to the moistening of the body
 Trishna Prashamana-satiety from thirst  Substance having Vilodane Sakthi-liquidity is the
 Sweda harana-pacification of Sweating ability to dissolve substances

 Daha Prashamana-pacification of burning6 Mahabuta- Jala

 Substances having Sthambana Sakthi will arrest PICCHILA GUNA


the movement & cause stagnation Substance having Lepane Sakthi

DISCUSSION
Substance having kledana Sakthi is Snigdha. It induce
All Sneha Dravyas have Jala Mahabuta in common.
4 attributes
Generally Sneha Dravyas have Guru, Drava,
 Snehakrit –induces Snehana Sukshma, Sara, Snigdha, Pichchhila, Sheeta, Manda
 Mardavakrit-produces softness in the body and Mridu Gunas. Drava Guna means fluidity &
helps in liquefication. Sukshma Guna means subtle &
 Balakrit-which strengthens the body has capability of penetrating into the Srotas. Sara
 Varnakara-that makes fair complexion7 means mobility & denotes movement of matter.
Snigdha means to hold together. Picchila is Guru in
 Snigdha guna is Vatashamaka, Kaphakara, nature & can produce Lepana. Guru is heavy & can
Vrishya produce Brihmana (Noursihment). Sheetha can
Mahabuta –Prithvi & Jala produce Sthambana & Sankochanam. It can cause
Vaso-constriction & Daha Prashamana. Mandha is
MANDHA GUNA dullness. Mridu produces Softness. But sometimes
 Substances having Shamane Sakthi even a Sneha Dravya can have a opposite Guna. Taila
 Sluggish substances are indicated in palliation is Ushna & Sthairyakaraka and not Sara in nature.
