I really dislike Awakened flora. It’s bad enough
having predators we once thought were myth and
legend out in the wilds trying to kill us, but it’s just
a slap in the evolutionary face to know you are
occasionally kicked off the top of the food chain
by a fragging plant!
With that out of my system, let me tell you
how problematic this particular species of Awak-
ened tree can be. First, they look very similar to
standard cembra pines, with thick black needles
mixed around the regular green variety. Several
branches are curled back around the trunk when
the tree is set to strike, which from most of my // PAIN PINE //
investigations is all the time. For the quick-and-
dirty explanation of the threat here, these trees
lash out and knock down or kill animals that get
close. They grow in groups that often share root
structures and are frequently found near cliff edg-
es, where they grow those root systems to reach
the bottom or the nearest flat surfaces where bod-
ies may land.
Now, before any trolls start commenting or
chuckling, sure, this isn’t exactly a threat to you,
but I’m a gnome, and even average humans and
elves could be at risk of being thrown off balance.
This is before I go into the danger of those black
needles and their cones.
I’ll just admit to getting thoroughly distracted
in watching another pain pine and the ill-fated al-
pine chaff that landed among its branches. I was
trying to get a better camera angle and took one
too many steps back, right into range of the pain
pine behind me. Three branches whipped out in

Critter Corner: Elephants
Welcome back to Critter Corner. I’m your host, Mr. Johnson, here to talk about elephants. Not just any elephants, but the
powerful Awakened varieties that you’re likely to encounter in the savannas of the Sixth World. 111
First up is the bullyphant, a large, tough, and aggressive elephant with a vengeful and protective streak. These critters
How to Deal
If you are going to be working in an area with a herd of elephants, take extra precautions to avoid them if you can. Most
elephants will avoid you, and even bullyphants aren’t likely to be a problem unless you get within rifle range of the herd.
A Grimm’s elephant might represent a bigger problem, but if you do your legwork, you’ll at least be aware that one’s out
there—they always leave a trail of destruction. If you find yourself under attack by a bullyphant or Grimm’s elephant, your
best (and likely only) chance of survival is to get in a vehicle and leave.
If you need to take a bullyphant or Grimm’s elephant down, be aware that even a direct hit from a Panther cannon is not
likely to do much—if anything. Your best bet to get around their hardened armor is mana-based direct combat spells, though
it will still take quite a few mana bolts to drop one.
Between the two, the bullyphant is much more dangerous. Not only do they have more armor and a higher Body attri-
bute, but they are very difficult to sneak around. If you need to sneak past a bullyphant, make sure to have an extra advan-
tage such as concealment from a spirit or an invisibility spell. Neither Grimm’s elephants or bullyphants are dual natured, so
they won’t detect any astral activity.
By comparison to the bullyphant, what the Grimm’s lacks in armor and enhanced perception, they make up for in atti-
tude, and their close combat attack deals incredible damage. When dealing with either of these critters, avoid close combat
at all costs—it takes only one hit from one of these to kill even the toughest individuals.
Gamemaster Tips
Bullyphants are a hazard, while Grimm’s elephants are a threat. If the PCs are working in a savanna, a herd of elephants
is not something they can safely ignore. The bullyphant is unlikely to attack or interfere with the PCs unless they get close to
the herd, but the Grimm’s elephant will come after them looking for blood.
These elephants could make for an interesting complication on a run—perhaps a herd is nearby when the runners need
to go after their target. The PCs could use their presence as an advantage or a distraction, but it’s equally likely that they’ll
be in danger as well.
Plot Hook
The PCs are hired to deal with a problem—a herd of elephants includes both a bullyphant and a Grimm’s elephant. Mr.
Johnson wants the team to capture or kill the Grimm’s elephant.
Milk Run
The Grimm’s elephant attacks a nearby camp, allowing the PCs to take it on directly without having to deal with the
bullyphant or the rest of the herd.

Vampire Penguin
(Pygoscelis hematos)
How does a genius gnome parabiologist get
nearly killed by penguins? Well, that’s a funny sto-
ry.
First off, let me tell you about this paraspecies
of the adorable Adélie penguin. Rather than the
well-known black-and-white coloration of those
little guys, the vampire penguin is almost entirely
black, with the only color coming from a collar of
crimson around their neck, crimson around their
eyes, and blood-red beak and feet. They’re the
same size and often join groups of their mundane
cousins when huddling for warmth. Their eyes
are a disturbing shade of silvery-blue that almost
makes you feel like they’re blind. To the contrary,
though, the eyes offer spectacular vision at night
and in the dark waters of the Antarctic.
As their name implies, the primary sustenance
of these penguins is blood, though they are not in
any way, shape, or form Infected with HMHVV.
They don’t feed on the life force of a being, just
literally their blood. This is accomplished by the
presence of a mild anesthetic and anticoagulant
produced by a gland in their beak. Which leads me
to my near-death experience.
I was doing independent research on this spe-
cies with a small team of doctorate students. We
set up a small camp near a major huddle point for
a flock of Adèlie penguins, which we knew con-
tained a cluster of vampire penguins. We were sev-

Kraken
Ah, the famous kraken (Architeuthis megagi-
ganteus). These beasts are enormous cephalopods
(believed to originate from giant squid) that are
most often mistaken for small floating islands. Its
streamlined head and body can exceed twenty-five
meters in length. The eight arms are each over
thirty meters in length. The more specialized ten-
tacles terminate in manipulative oval pads that are
roughly forty meters long. The entire length of all
eight arms and the two feeding tentacles are cov-
ered in suckers approximately thirty centimeters
across. Though no specimens have been captured
alive, their weight is estimated at over 15,000 ki-
lograms. A kraken is primarily white, but it can
be mottled with blues and browns. Its head is ar-
mored with a calcium exoskeleton, and a powerful
beak extends from its ventral surface.
Thankfully, kraken are very rare, but they
can be found anywhere in the open ocean. The
majority of sightings have been off the Antarctic
continental shelf, but that is far from conclusive.
They spend most of their time at extreme depths,
so metahumanity knows very little about kraken
and their life cycles. What we do know of their
physiology comes from examination of the spec-
imen that attacked the Ares Apollo supercarrier
in 2048. Analysis of the creature determined that
the kraken is the Awakened form of the colossal
squid while having some physical resemblance to
the giant squid. Additionally, the digestive tract
of the specimen included a partially digested le-
viathan and parts of the Apollo’s hull. The most
disturbing discovery is that the specimen was fe-
male and had over 1,200 immature and unfertil-
ized eggs.
Despite being a deep-dwelling species, the ma-
jority of kraken encounters occur at or near the
surface of deep ocean. Kraken will often seemingly
mistake oceangoing ships for prey animals, pursue
them, and then attack them. With the exception of
military vessels, it is highly unlikely—even though
