of characters based on evidence in the text. They can distinguish supporting details from the main points in a text,
identify the main conclusions that present and contrast arguments in a clearly signalled way and recognise the use
of cohesive devices to link ideas within and between paragraphs. They can scan a long text or a set of related texts
in order to find specific information.

Writing

Listening
Performance summary At level

The student understands the main information in familiar standard texts and can distinguish between main ideas
and supporting details. They can follow an everyday conversation or informal interview on common topic and infer
speakers' opinions, and recognise a joke has been made. They can understand a large part of many TV programmes
on familiar topics, or structured presentations within their own field and classes and training courses on a range
of topics ( provided the content is simple). They can extract the meaning of unknown words from context if the
discussed topic is familiar. They can recognise examples and their relation to the idea they support.

Speaking

The student can use a range of simple language with more confidence to produce more developed spoken
contributions. For instance, they can talk about past events or experiences, make simple predictions about the
future, give short, basic descriptions of events and activities using simple language. They can participate in short
conversations in routine contexts on topics of interests, respond to suggestions and make basic interjections. They
can express their opinion on familiar topics, give reasons for a choice, express regret /enthusiasm/excitement using
simple language. They are able to tell a story or describe something in a simple list of points.
