After the outbreak of the World War I, the brothers left the rest-
less Bialystok, which was located near the Russian-German front-
line. From there, they’ve moved to Kyiv, and then to Mogilev, after
which Mikhail was conscripted to the army. Kaufman has spent
almost all the civil war in Mogilev, working as a director of a ga-
rage, which allowed him to continue his fascination with technical
equipment. After demobilization in 1992, he dreamed to apply to
the aeronavigation school, but was unable to pass the examina-
tions because of an illness. Later, he planned to study at the uni-
versity’s department of Social Sciences, but his financial condition
interfered with these plans.

At that time, Dziga Vertov, who was feeling enthusiastic for the
October coup d’état and the revolutionary events in the country,
stood at the origins of the Soviet cinematic propaganda. He offered
his brother to join the All-Russian Photo and Film Department.
Kaufman agreed and, following his brother’s advice, watched all
the pre- and after-revolutionary chronicles, as well as the old films
by Pathe and Gaumont.
Similar to Vertov, Mikhail started his work as a filming organi-
zer at the Photo and Film Department. Later, he took part in pro-
duction of the film named Rightist Esers’ Process. In this film, he
even appeared on the screen with another future Kinok, Ivan Bel-

yakov. One of the first frames filmed by Kaufman was made with a
self-made camera, made up from the parts of two Pathe cameras.
In the beginning, he also used the pieces of film stock that were left
over from other cinematographers.
Mikhail learned much from the leading cinematographer of that
time, Aleksandr Levitskii, and at the end of 1922 he independently
shot the skier marathon Moscow – Arkhangelsk – Moscow. In order
to film the finish on the Vorobyovy Hills, he ran in high snow at
high speed and managed to film as planned. Later he will say that
he has “felt his heart for the first time” on that day.

in the air. He used to push himself to his limits, often risking his life.
While working on the episodes of Kino-Pravda, Kaufman used
to lay on the rails with the camera and film the train rushing for-
ward above him. Once, the last happened to be not properly at-
tached and Kaufman had escaped death by moving aside at the last
moment. While filming the plants for Man with a Movie Camera,
he worked from a special wagonette, hanging at 20 meters height;
another time, he worked standing on top of a train. During the
height filming for The Eleventh Year, he lost balance dropped his
camera, and was miraculously caught at the last moment. There
were dozens of such stories in Kaufman’s career.

The artistic and life paths of the brothers Dziga Vertov and
Mikhail Kaufman have been intertwined for a long time. They
worked together on Kino-Pravda (1925) and One Sixth Part of the
World (1926), and they’ve also moved to Ukraine together. During
the second half of the 1920s, a wide anti-formalist campaign was
launched in Russia, and many avant-garde and experimental piec-
es were harshly criticized. The Kinoks were especially scorned
for their formalism. As a result, Vertov was fired from Sovkino in
1927. Together with Kaufman and Elizaveta Svilova, they moved
to Kyiv. They found jobs at the VUFKU, where, with support of the

turns this film into the first, and probably the most lyrical, declara-
tion of love to the Ukrainian capital and its inhabitants.
In Spring has also become one of the first Ukrainian films with
a specially written soundtrack. It was created by 22 years old com-
poser Leonid Kaufman, a graduate of the M. Lysenko Musical Dra-
ma Institute. The soundtrack was praised for its lyricism, but also
criticized for the lack of dramaticism. The attitude towards the
movie itself was similar. Many critics noted that Kaufman “learned
from his brother’s failures”, and Mykhailo Makotynskyi, the chair-
man of the VUFKU, declared at the movie discussion: “If I were a
poet, I would have written lyrics for this movie”.

length movie, it was forgotten. For more than 80 years, this film
was being kept at the The Central State CinePhotoPhono Archives
of Ukraine named after H. Pshenychnyi, which was a part of KGB
in Soviet times. Only in 2015, it was purchased and restored by
Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Center.
The director’s fate was not particularly pleasant as well. In 1930s,
Kaufman had returned to Moscow. From 1941 until 1977, he created
dozens of films for Mostekhfilm (currently Tsentrnauchfilm). Never-
theless, until his last days, he used to recall the times of cooperation
and fighting with Dziga Vertov as the best years of his life. For him,
this period became a measuring stick both in cinema and outside
24
of it. Kaufman, who has always been optimistic and easygoing, has
enjoyed women’s attention and could become the life of the party
in any company, and would live through numerous strokes of fate.
His Italian girlfriend Gabrielle, with whom Mikhail lived in
spite of all the dangers of having “contacts with foreigners”, dis-
appeared under tragic circumstances in 1932. Gabrielle was ne-
ver found, and their little daughter was found half-conscious and
died in the hospital. According to Vertov, this event has changed
Mikhail completely.
The next blow occurred with the beginning of the Second World
War: while filming the chronicle of Soviet troops entering Poland

(in other words, occupying it), the Cheka agents prevented Mikhail
from taking his mother from a pre-war Bialystok. As a result, she
became one of the millions Jewish victims of the Holocaust.
After the end of the war, Mikhail Kaufman continued making
documentaries that were marked with technique experiments
(among his innovative works, there was Aviamarch, dedicated to
the aviation parade). Following Dziga Vertov’s death, he became
one of the most active popularizers of the brother’s heritage, to-
gether with his wife Elizaveta Svilova.
Nevertheless, Kaufman himself remained in his brother’s sha-
dow for a long time. Only in the recent decade, the situation started

to change after the return of In Spring into the critical field and
the discovery of Unprecedented Campaign. These films made clear
that Kaufman’s work as a director was no less significant for the
history of cinema than his work as a cinematographer. As a direc-
tor, he was not only the follower of the Kinoks’ theory and Vertov’s
opponent, but also a prominent author, who was ahead of his time
and creates the language of documentary and avant-garde cinema,
which was used by many generations of filmmakers ever since.

ganization”, which is quite vague and abstract: “Comrade Kaufman
says that it resulted from his conscious approach, but I say: no, com-
rade Kaufman, intuition also took part in this process. Your poetic
constitution contributed to this a lot, because one cannot decom-
pose the material this way with mere intelligence. While watching

turn your back on music”. The manifesto reveals the main theoret-
ical pathos of the Kinoks – creation of absolute, universal film lan-
guage, which is free from theatrical and literary conventions. Vertov
and Kaufman succeeded in creating Man with a Movie Camera and In
Spring – the films that transmit the visual without resorting to titles,
scenario, actors, and decorations – only seven years later.
British film theorist Stephen Heath once said that every film
is a real drama of vision, which topically and symptomatically re-
turns back to origins of cinema. As cinematographer and a direc-
tor, Kaufman also belongs to this tradition, which is visual rather
than logocentric. Since childhood, Kaufman was fascinated with

photographical image, not the verbal one. Lev Roshal, the classi-
cal Kaufman’s biographer, provides us numerous interesting de-
tails concerning Mikhail Kaufman’s enthusiasm for photo equip-
ment, photography, and experiments. During his gymnasium years,
Kaufman never separated from his self-made camera obscura, and
later – with a photo camera. In the times of civil war, along with
technical experiments, he works as a director of a garage. “He shoots
films and photos, is familiar with automobiles, electrical equipment,
blacksmith and locksmith craft, and is prone to experiments”, ac-
cording to Vertov’s characteristic of his brother for the State Com-
mittee of Cinematography.

viewpoint, In Spring becomes the most cinematic film of its era, and
photographer and cinematographer Kaufman turns into the key fi-
gure of Soviet cinematic tradition.
Brik, who is still under influence of the idea of “defamiliariza-
tion”, sees the cinematographer’s task and the essence of cinemato-
graphy in the ability to shoot the most visual scene, to show the usual
things in unusual light, rather than create an intellectual plot. Judging
from the feedback mentioned above, Kaufman deals with this task,
but does not limit himself to the formalistic search of “defamiliariza-
tion” effects. Unlike Vertov, Kaufman did not write futuristic manifes-
tos, – he only signed them. His heritage does not include large amount

slow or too fast, too small or too large, Kaufman uses for In Spring
a wide range of technical methods in order to fix this situation. For
instance, a human eye cannot fixate the processes that are too slow
and extended in time. In real life, we cannot see the movement of
an hour hand, the growth of grass, the blossoming of buds, or the
slow processes of decay. By using the “slow motion” filming, which
allows to shorten the distance between the moments of these slow
phenomena extended in time, Kaufman, in his own words, provides
the viewer with not just a formalist trick, but acquaints him with
the basics of visual analysis. The melting snowman is probably the
most prominent example of “slow motion” in the film. Rather than

angles, he often risked not only equipment but also his own health.
He used to film from a cradle hanging over the abyss, descended
into the Donbas mine, burned numerous pairs of boots near the
blast furnaces. Kaufman obviously prefers the look of the machine
to a human look. Who is this “new viewer”, and what seeing in a
new way really means?
The search for these subjectless angles underlies, same as for
many artists of the 1920s, not only and aesthetical but also a politi-
cal gesture. The literary and artistic traditions Kaufman and Vertov
oppose so ardently have formed a persistent canon of outdated “in-
dividualistic” (bourgeois) stereotypes. By focusing on the portrayal

new aspects of this film, since it has numerous positions for percep-
tion. Like every great piece, this one is highly dialectical, and not
only for our time, but also in a greater historical perspective. Maybe
in 100 or 200 years this movie would cause different thoughts and
reactions, but there will be many thoughts. This is a great indicator.
The outstanding movie is a hymn to labor, youth, it is filled with lyr-
icism, and all of this results from mundane material.

ry problems and understands that they constitute just a small seg-
ment of life. Here, we see real life, real human spirit, real human la-
bor, and everyone should watch this picture to feel healthy again. We
make up numerous theories, talking about the plans of proletarian
culture, of Soviet culture. Each in their own way: the constructivists
suggest their plan for the proletarian culture; the romanticists also
have a plan. So this plan results from many theories, and not all of
them are probed with practice. You mistrust these theories. Then you
watch this movie and see how everyday material results in a colossal
philosophy, a real plan for proletarian culture. From this view, the

puts them into one concise and natural form. This is truly impressing.
The biological process is so strongly revealed that every poet,
musician, or another artist, who would watch and listen to this with
his individual skills, will be amazed with these depths of revelation
of the nature’s secrets. You are the poet Mykola Voronyi, you’ve been
writing your entire life, and yet you cannot create anything similar.
And you are charged with awe. This piece is incredibly strong. Even
the montage is dialectical. Comrade Kaufman says that it resulted
from his conscious approach, but I say: no, comrade Kaufman, in-
tuition also took part in this process. Your poetic constitution con-
tributed to this a lot, because one cannot decompose the material

this way with mere intelligence. While watching this picture, you
feel joy and youth, you love the land and want to live upon this land,
you love the Union and want to live inseparably from it, no matter
what. You come to believe that collectivism is a natural phenome-
non, which is intrinsic to humans. All the individual has to do is to
watch. We should send this picture abroad – let them see that we do
not cry, that we live. Are there any negative sides to the movie? It is
a shame to talk about drawbacks, but still the multiplication meth-
od seems to me inadequate (or maybe just unusual) to the general
naturalistic style of the film. These jumping eggs remind of futurism
and move away from the revelation of the nature’s secrets. If we

take this as a separate frame with the director’s sarcastic view, this
style might appear rational. The anti-religious episodes are witty
and interesting. Seeing a drunkard with his nose in the ground, and
then an athlete, is wonderful and convincing. However, if instead
of an argument I see a pig, does this mean that gluttony […] only
in the old way of life. Rather, this is a vegetarian idea, promoted in
the context of anti-religious struggle. I love children, and the assort-
ment of children, as well as flowers, is wonderfully represented in
comrade Kaufman’s work. These little faces and children’s smiles
are incredibly beautiful. Nevertheless, wouldn’t the point at the end
of the film – a child walking the street with insecure steps, – lead

ending is amazing and pleasant from the musical point of view, but
I wanted to share my anxiety. There are too many animals. I think
that without all this mess in the zoo the film would have been better.
In general, the movie is pure delight.

the episode with children who are watching birds the way comrade
Kaufman did, one has to be a great artist. The film is enormously
charged; it overwhelms and makes us, as comrade Savchenko has
noticed, to express ourselves with exclamations. Some episodes, in
my opinion, could have been shortened. For example, the dance is
long and tiring. The episode with the pig is very strong and acute
as an element of a religious celebration. This symbol will abuse re-
ligious sentiments. It will act very sharply and negatively, which is
good. The cemetery scene will make the strongest impression, espe-
cially in the villages (the assumption that it appeals only to the city
is wrong). It is no less typical for the village than it is for the city. I

Kaufman himself has said at that time that he was not able to think
through these aspects due to objective reasons (he had no time be-
cause of the end of shooting season, a travel abroad was lying ahead
etc). As a result, today’s reports fully characterize this movie and
bring complete reconciliation with some comrades, who thought
that there is an “attacking” group. There was no group; just some
individuals wanted the movie to become even better. If only every
discussion would have such results, it would have been an ideal
VUFKU organization.
I believe that the previous evaluation should remain unchanged,

suggestion and have not considered him the enemy of my film. I ac-
cept not only positive criticism, and if the criticism can be fruitful,
I only welcome it. Even now, I do not believe that the movie deals
with the issue of industrialization in a satisfactory way. I think that
without heavy industry, one cannot speak about industrialization
at all. And in my picture, light industry is depicted as heavy indus-
try and merges with the issue of industrialization in general. I was
wary of the fact that the construction and other industrial moments
in the film would lead to the aspiration to see the heavy industry as

the movie so far. Instead, they are writing about many other films,
some of which have not even been released. This is an adequate film,
and the viewers should receive it in the adequate way. The impulse
to watch the film is transmitted through its advertising. Nothing has
been done in this respect. We should raise this question immediately.
As for the screenings of the film and the cinema theaters. I know
about the tendency to screen the non-fiction films at the secondary
cinemas. This is completely wrong, and not because I want to see my
picture at Manser’s. The whole province is looking after the screen-
ings at the primary cinemas, especially in the capital. If the picture

Apparently, Kaufman often filmed at his own discretion, which
was not approved by Vertov. In the last interview given by Kaufman

and considers himself co-author of films alongside his brother: “It

the kino-eye, written by the movie camera, which operated pure film
language… One hundred percent film language”. The early, analytical
period of Kino-Eye (1924) and Kino-Pravda (1922-1924), whose task

unexpectedly, and, as a result, to create a specific cinematic thing,
is replaced by the synthetic period: the creation of a universal film

consider the previous joint work of the brothers, recognizing Kaufman
as an equal co-author of The Eleventh Year and Man with a Movie Cam-

reviews from the Ukrainian press: “Kaufman has reached the creative
heights: we see Kaufman as an artist, Kaufman as a poet, a ingenious
montage by Kaufman”, Leonid Pervomaiskyi wrote.
Kaufman’s lyricism is now opposed to Vertov’s mechanistic pa-

in the (filming) apparatus, Kaufman is interested in the human. And
this difference between brothers is not about aesthetic, but about

In the 1930 edition of Mykola Ushakov’s book Three Cinematogra-
phers, Kaufman has already been named one of the three most promi-
nent Ukrainian cinematographers of his time. While In Spring was still
regarded by Ukrainian critics as a work by the Kinoks school, Unpre-

Kinoks, who were harshly criticized for formalism and aestheticism,
which allowed this film to appear on the screens for a short time.

film, was mainly equipped with American agricultural machinery

an opportunity to conduct an experiment on the establishment of
large farms in the USSR.
In addition to the scenes of the industrialization of the Donbas

Regarding shortenings, I am asking the Inspection Board about

of the movie. It is great from the formal point of view, but it lacks
the class clarity. Kaufman is a professional, but he was not able to
express the proletarian ideology, which would have made the pic-
ture lively. This movie is dry and boring; it flows on the screen but
does not tell anything to the proletarian and the village viewer.

M. FART UCHNYI: In this case they are – you haven’t even seen the
film. It is filled with sense from the beginning to the end. From
the very beginning, comrade Kaufman takes the reconstruction
process in the village and shows us not only production,
machinery, and processes, but also the people. He connects the
intertitles to the material in order to prove certain ideas. The film
contains many citations and fragments from the party decisions.
S . DERIUHIN : Clumsy agitation.
M. FART UCHNYI: This is not clumsy agitation, because all of this
merges beautifully with the visual material. I do not see any
unadorned formalism here, on the contrary – the movie has both

As for the issue raised by comrade Makotynskyi. I haven’t en-

terial should also have a plan…
M YKHA ILO M A KOT YNSKYI: A plan for sure
M. FA RT UCHN YI: …some budgets and deadlines. Every plan

if the material spoke for itself. I have chosen the simplest phrases
that were expressed with very simple language – the language of
Lenin’s and Stalin’s writings and speeches. I believe that a simple
and unpretentious intertitle, which corresponds to the material,
will have much stronger appeal than a loud dramatic one.
As for the length, I am strictly against lengthy movies. If I had an
opportunity to work on this piece some more, I would have short-
ened it drastically. Still, I’ve had my reasons to keep the length. I
am familiar with the material, I know every frame by heart, and
every frame seems prolonged to me; however, I had to keep in
mind the necessity to communicate with the mass viewer, who has

This concludes the preliminary shooting. Now we turn to fixa-
tion. Let us discuss some of the points.
W a n d e r i n g p r i e s t s. The analysis of this phenomenon
shows the necessity to
1) shoot with a hidden camera (since the phenomenon is
influenced by the presence of movie camera),
2) give the viewer enough time to look at the priest (since the
phenomenon is dynamic and passes quickly),

small piece from the puppet comedy of religious traditions and rit-
uals.
The movie camera enabled me to regard this life phenomenon
with the armed eye, similarly to a microscope, which opens to us
things that are invisible with the naked eye. Therefore, the movie
camera has played its role as the equipment for the film analysis.
Here I focus only on the most illustrative means that reveal this
entirely new approach.
Rapid shooting equips our eyes for the analysis of fast-moving
phenomena.
Shooting from the points of limited or zero availability for the
207
naked eye.
Outlay of the general view on the phenomena and close-up
fixation of their elements with macro-shooting, micro-shooting,
tele-shooting etc.
All of this constitutes the technical possibilities of the movie
camera.
This process results in the material for the future cinematic thing,
which is not yet entirely composed from the elements and still in-
cludes complicated phenomena that have to be decomposed. Besides,
the element itself is variable and is regarded as a detail or as a mate-
rial, depending on the theme and the form of cinematic expression.

the phenomena with the movie camera, which arms the human vi-
sion and has the ability to fixate),
— begins the second stage of working on a cinematic thing –
the secondary analysis.
As the result of the primary analysis, we have acquired the ma-
terial for the future cinematic thing, which is not yet entirely com-
prised of the elements and still includes many complicated phe-
nomena that require further analysis.
For instance, if the element of the primary analysis has fixated
the phenomenon of a pole jump, the secondary analysis decompos-
es this phenomenon into a group of elements:

one can only talk about the sorting of the primary analysis ele-
ments and about their thematic “cohesion” (in terms of Pudovkin)
or “collision” (in terms of Eisenstein).
Let us approach the sorted material, which was acquired by the
primary analysis. For instance, we take the “A” piece from the cut-
ting room. Assuming that all the frames of this piece are equal in
terms of composition and content, it is evident that this piece con-
tains a static phenomenon.
Let us take the second piece – “B”.
We can see that all the frames of this piece are different from
their neighbors, because the primary analysis has fixated a moving

Let us repeat this process with the piece from the second group:
he approaches the ball
kicks the ball
the player’s inertion
etc.

We have discussed the frame, but not the basic element of the
cinematic language. Analyzing the frame and its content, we often
find the elements that have to be separated and used independently.
These elements can be distinguished with help of photography –
zooming in some parts of the frame from the negative.
Projection printing usage in cinema allows to decompose a
frame into elements. Some of these elements, derived from differ-
ent frames, can be synthesized in a new frame. This is called “a
composite frame”.
Therefore, after investigating the material of the primary ana-
lysis and decomposing it into elements with the secondary analy-

July. The Volkhovbud. Long days and short white nights. This
year’s rainy summer has caused great waterfalls.
The Volkhovbud has been filmed many times before. We are not
the first ones with a camera here.
The stereotypical, photographic, static locations stand out a
mile.
We are not used to replications.
In search of shooting points, we descend into the abyss by the
ropeway. Everything is simmering underneath. The wall of raging
water is just a meter ahead of us. It takes your breath away – until
the moment you take your camera. You forget all the dangers while

working. You even forget that an untimely sign with a flag can turn
us into the victims of the seething waters.
We see a crafty Lenin bust in the clean turbo machinery hall. The
thought about Lenin involuntarily associates with the realization of
his legacy through this and many other halls with turbo machinery.
I realize this idea with complex shooting with montage in the mid-
dle of the frame. We return to the ropeway. After the forward call,
the whole Volkhovbud with its village, floodgates, station, and dam,
is flowing overhead. At the halfway I give the downward call. Sud-
denly we rush into the abyss with an incredible speed, as if taken
up by the whirl. I instinctively grab the edge of the basket with one

hand, while disorderly waving the flag with the other, remembering
about signalization. After a couple of minutes we come to our senses
and realize that, instead of falling, we are slightly swinging at one
point. The seething waters created the illusion of dashing forward.
It is funny to remember. I owe some grey hairs to those minutes.
At the Kharkiv locomotive plant, the roar of the waterfall is re-
placed with the skirring of cutters and saws, the hammering and
clattering of the valves.
We are marking the most interesting points.
The power plant provides energy for the whole plant via the ca-
bles that branch off in various directions like a spider web.

The cooper shop floor amazes with its machine-tools that per-
form numerous manipulations at the same time. The details from
all over the plant come to the assembly shop floor and turn into the
locomotives on the rails. The camera support – the “universal head”
invented by me, – was very useful during the shooting: it liberates
me from the tripod, allowing to secure the camera on the support of
the lathe, on the moving platform of the chipping tool, on the hook
of the movable crane, or even on the plant chimney. I tremble as I’m
climbing the chimney brackets, grasping them with one hand and

shop, prior to melting the ore, are pinching the petrified crust from
the previous “eliquation”, in order to reach the liquid metal. The
lava is rushing out of the blast furnace under great pressure, always
unexpectedly, and everything around is burning for a few minutes.
It is hard to imagine that anything could survive within this flame.
After the first ejection subsides, you are surprised that every-
thing is fine and that every worker, supposedly doomed to death,
is standing on his place. The workers jumped away from the first
lava ejection on time, assumed their positions near the channels and
direct the liquid metal into necessary directions. Hard work is going
on around the fiery trap.

One has to make sure that the lava flow is not too intense – oth-
erwise the buckets will not be delivered on time, and a huge amount
of metal might perish fruitlessly. Attention is also necessary to pre-
vent the flow from stopping, or there will be a “kozel” – the situation
when all the metal will petrify inside the blast furnace.
I was aware of all the processes, but the very first “eliquation”
proved my foolishness.
I’ve taken my camera and stood on the point that seemed quite
safe. If it had not been for the worker who had dragged me away in
the most critical moment, I would have been in real trouble.
Vertov also had to run for his life, having accidentally dropped

a tape into the liquid metal. But in a few days we became used to
everything and were able to orientate ourselves normally. The blast
furnaces work day and night. We are shooting the night “eliqua-
tion”, which is a gorgeous sight.
The blast furnace supplies a chain of hot shops. Part of its pro-
duction goes to the Bessemer shop floor, where the metal tempera-
ture is increased into special moving pear-shaped buckets. During
this process, the excess carbon is removed, and special sorts of steel
are produced. The last purging takes place before pouring the steel,
in order to remove the dross from the surface.

The blast furnace ejects a thick shower of tiny dross sparks. In-
stead of dying away, they pour over the facility, like a rain of fire. The
temperature inside the building reaches almost unbearable grades.
Blood is springing towards your head. Eyes are popping out of
their sockets.
The immensity of the sight and the thrill help us to endure this
moment until the end. The blast furnace and the Bessemer temper

shop, where the locomotive wheel rims are produced.

No matter where you stand with your camera, you always end up
on the way of heated metal. You have to maneuver in order to avoid
a hot kiss. Some burned body parts are inevitable in the beginning,
but they actively warn you to be aware. Sometimes the awareness
is not sufficient. Too many surprises. I am standing with the camera,
waiting for installation of lighting on the rollers that produce the
wires. The wire is transferred through one caliber; a worker takes it
from the other side and passes it onto the next caliber. The process
repeats a couple of times. All of a sudden, a fiery riviere encircles
me and the camera. The machine is stopped on time, which saves

pressing. A minute flight into the abyss, and we are almost 500 me-
ters underground.
A person ahead of us is in charge of the elevator. He resembles a
guard of the underground kingdom. He is wearing a broad brim hat
and a long waterproof “burka”. The underground rain pours over
him incessantly, and the electric light creates the play of light and
shadow on his clothes, making him look even more surrealistic.

I had to continue the shooting, operating the machine gun turret.
The air pressure is so high that one has to extend all his strength
just to move the handle normally. The wind is piercing all the un-
covered body parts, penetrating every gap. It is hard to breathe,
and every once in a while, one has to hide in the machine to get
some rest.
On the way to the airfield, a dove got caught between the air-
plane wings. It was hooked by a wire and fell dead into the abyss.

this incident.
All the other works at the Dniprelstan are not cinematic enough
to show the whole immensity, vastness, and significance of this
construction. Our task becomes even more complicated in view of
the fact that we were not shooting a Dniprelstan movie. Our aim
was just to depict its essence.
In my opinion, we have fulfilled this task.
Thus, our feet and the three pods of the camera have been wan-

The Kinoks believed that the movie camera has to fixate and
structure the life phenomena.
They denied the storyline and the script.
Their task was to fixate with the lens the phenomena that are out
of reach of an ordinary viewer due to their velocity (the movement
of a bullet or a horse), their remoteness in time and space, etc.
The Kinoks had to observe the phenomenon and the movements
from various viewpoints. For Kaliuzhnyi, an unusual angle is just a
trick, the cinematographer’s whim. For Kaufman, the angle is a legit-
imate way to explore the movement.
Like most cinematographers, Kaufman has been dealing with

side pictures. In order to make the same viewers pay attention to the
city episodes, they have to be filmed in a way that impresses them.
The main Kaufman’s methods:
Sudden shooting, while its object has not yet noticed the camera.
Hidden camera. This method was used in In Spring. The cinematog-
rapher comes to a cemetery and shoots a funeral. Kaufman also used
to distract the attention of the objects with second camera, storyteller
or something else. As soon as the object’s attention entirely focuses
on something else, the real shooting begins.
Shooting in motion, or the double-motion method. The phenom-
enon is static. The movie camera passes by it, shooting in front of it,
262
always turning to the thing. This looks as if the thing itself is turning
(workers’ village, crane, and ship from The Eleventh Year).
Using the properties of long-focus lens, which change the per-
spectives slightly while shooting a moving object. This method was
used in order to film the priest from In Spring.
Multiplication and rapid. Kaufman never uses the standard 16
frames per second. He believes that every phenomenon takes its
time. Kaufman positions the fact on the time scale in his own way,
instilling a certain intonation on it. For Kaufman, multiplication and
rapid shooting are more than tricks. They allow him to decipher the
sense of the Facts that cannot be deciphered with ordinary shoot-

ing. They analyze the train’s movement, the flower’s blooming, the
erosion of the rocks, the movements of human crowds, and the slow
motion of the clouds.
Work outside of the atelier made Kaufman to develop specific ap-
proaches towards the objects of shooting. Maybe he did not have to
accustom spiders, ants, or grubs to the camera, but a nested rook re-
quired a different attitude. Kaufman took the camera to the balcony.
As soon as the apparatus has entered the rook’s surroundings, she
left her nest and flew away, returning after some time. The hostess of
the apartment used to come to the balcony often, so the rook paid no
attention to her. The hostess belonged to the circle of the rook’s ha-
264
bitual object. Thus, Kaufman had to accustom the rook to the movie
camera and to begin shooting after it has stopped scaring her.
Children are quite similar to birds. Kaufman has spent some time
at the nursery while shooting them for the VUFKU. The children got
used to him. They used to turn the handle of the camera, treating it
as a toy. Accustoming them to the light was more difficult. The light
could not be striking upon their faces. Kaufman has directed it on
the napes. The beams were lighting the cheeks, only slightly touching
upon the faces.
Sudden shooting in a restaurant is incredibly hard (Moscow). The
spot lamps were installed in various locations, lighting some tables

or groups of tables. The shooting could not begin for three hours in a
row. The lighting equipment drew the visitors’ attention. Their move-
ments became very artificial. The team had to imitate a test of spot
lamps, turning them off and on. This resembled the famous method
of healing the mentally disturbed, when the patients are constant-
ly reminded of their imaginary fears. Eventually, the patient forgets
about them and recovers.
After three hours, the public got used to the light, recovered and
started eating. Kaufman was in charge of the spot lamps squadron
that lighted various groups of visitors by his command.
The Kinoks’ work also requires other methods of artificial light-

than the choice of material. The best frames of the The Eleventh Year
feature the sailors above the Lenin mausoleum, details of the ma-
chines, the flywheel, the wires against the cloudy background, the
worker hammering the mountain with trains that crawl around his
feet, with Dnipro River in the background.
Man with a Movie Camera is even more rhythmically structured
than The Eleventh Year. The leading role in the new film is per-
formed by the cinematographer – he wakes up before dawn, films
in the air, underground and under water, lies under a train, spawns
under the feet of Odesa rickshaws and their beer glasses, stops life,
shoots the time into the air, turns five minutes into one, and uses all

the tram. Passers-by. They get back to their usual drinking. (Rutman

Then – the intertitle: “They go to work”. Workers and clerks are pass-

elderly woman are passing by. (In Rutman’s film, the elderly woman
is slowly walking to the church door). Local railway. A train moves
by. The streets are waking up. The trains approach each other. Disas-

At the turning point, both trains collide into a giant caterpillar and

For the first time in the world cinema, the rhythmic structure of
the cinematic thing has reached maximum orderliness.
Some of the parts of In Spring have even equal length, structurally
resembling music pieces.
For instance, the inscriptions “Christ is Risen” were metro-rhyth-
mically mounted with the swinging bells.
The snowstorm was mounted according to the principle of tem-
pos with ever-increasing speeds. First, Kaufman shows four details
of the snow storm, 40 frames each. Second, he mounts four details
of the snowstorm in a row, every time decreasing the quantity of
frames per detail. The frames change incredibly quickly. The horse

seems covered with snow, even though there is no snow in that par-
ticular frame.
The sixth part is especially interesting in terms of montage and
rhythm. Some people are playing football. The goalkeeper falls.
Drunkard lies in the same position as the football player. The rhythm
stops. The drunkard is sleeping. The second drunkard cannot get
up. At the same time, the sportsman in rapid shooting gets up slow-
ly, stepping over the obstacle. In the subsequent frames appears a
drunk woman’s head. It is bending lower and lower. After her, light
jumps of the sportswomen are shown in rapid. A police officer takes
the drunkard and hardly puts him onto the carriage. The sportsman

easily jumps into water and back onto the trampoline. The carriage
starts moving, and suddenly motor races begin. The rhythm reaches
the maximum velocity and suddenly ceases. The carriage driver has
stopped it.
Kaufman filmed heads of the pioneers so that their column seems
counting off.
The lyric of spring is Kaufman’s best achievement – the last snow-
storm, streets covered with snow and dirt, the first flowers. Kaufman
filmed the flowery field that looks almost breathing. Blossoming
chestnut trees and snowball trees look rustling. Kaufman craftily
mixes the taste, smell, and hearing impressions.

the graves were different. Some people were yelling at the cinema-
tographer and wanted to beat him up, others demanded to destroy
the film. One of the visitors tried to assure that he was a Party mem-
ber since 1920 and came to the cemetery by coincidence.
While filming the fight of the drunkards, Kaufman had to bring
the camera into the circle of fighters.
Profession of the Kinok cinematographer, closely linked to sur-
prises and dangers, required from Kaufman a lot of wit and stamina.
Kaufman was filming the general plan of the Putyliv plant from
the moving electromagnetic crane, from 20 meters heigh. The Novo-
rossiysk panorama was filmed from a ropeway, which remained

abandoned for a long time and was very dangerous. The railway
bridge girder nearly kicked Kaufman from the roof of the carriage,
on top of which he stood. A cable hanging above the railway also
posed danger to him. The train’s speed was 60 kilometers per hour,
and the wind was blowing above the carriages, taking the breath
away and kicking the cinematographer from the roof.
Once, Kaufman was filming a herd of sheep in the Crimean vil-
lage Uskut, near Sudak. He climbed the rocks, started shooting, made
one incautious step, and fell down. Luckily, someone has caught him
by the leg. On another occasion, while shooting for The Eleventh Year,
a cinematographer fell from a rock with the camera, but he was also
