Sheet (9) – Solution

Problem 1:

Find the Laplace Transform of the following time functions:

a. 𝑓(𝑡) = sin(2𝑡) cos⁡(2𝑡)

b. 𝑓(𝑡) = cos 2 (3𝑡)
c. 𝑓(𝑡) = 𝑡𝑒 2𝑡 sin(3𝑡)
d. 𝑓(𝑡) = (𝑡 + 3)𝑢7 (𝑡)

d.

e. 𝑓(𝑡) = sin 𝑡(𝑢(𝑡) − 𝑢(𝑡 − 𝜋)) = sin 𝑡⁡𝑢(𝑡) − sin 𝑡⁡𝑢(𝑡 − 𝜋)

Notice that sin 𝑡 = − sin(𝑡 − 𝜋)

𝑓(𝑡) = sin 𝑡⁡ + sin(𝑡 − 𝜋)⁡𝑢(𝑡 − 𝜋)

a. 𝐹(𝑠) =

𝑠−3
b. 𝐹(𝑠) = (𝑠−3)2

j. 𝐹(𝑠) = ⁡ ⁡

Solution:

a.

𝑠−3 𝑠
b. ℒ −1 [(𝑠−3)2 ] = 𝑒 3𝑡 ℒ −1 [ ] = 𝑒 3𝑡 cos 3𝑡
+9 𝑠 2 +9

4 4 4 1 1 4
c. ℒ −1 [ ] = ℒ −1 [(𝑠−2)(𝑠+1)] = ℒ −1 [ − ] = (𝑒 2𝑡 − 𝑒 −𝑡 )
𝑠 2 −𝑠−2 3 𝑠−2 𝑠+1 3

𝑒 −4𝑠
d. ℒ −1 [ ] = ℒ −1 [𝑒 −4𝑠 𝑋(𝑠)] = 𝑢(𝑡 − 4)𝑥(𝑡 − 4)
𝑠+2

Where 𝑥(𝑡) = ℒ −1 [𝑠+2] = 𝑒 −2𝑡
Hence:
𝑒 −4𝑠
ℒ −1 [ ] = 𝑢(𝑡 − 4)𝑥(𝑡 − 4) = 𝑢(𝑡 − 4)𝑒 −2(𝑡−4)

Problem 3:

Resolve problem 1a in Sheet 5 using Laplace transform to get Y(s).

Solution:
We can easily convert from the time domain to the s-domain using the Laplace table:
1 𝑒 −2𝑠
𝑓1 (𝑡) = 2[𝑢(𝑡) − 𝑢(𝑡 − 2)] →𝐹1 (𝑠) = 2( − )
𝑠 𝑠
𝑓2 (𝑡) = (−𝑡 + 2)[𝑢(𝑡) − 𝑢(𝑡 − 2)] = (−𝑡 + 2)𝑢(𝑡) − (−𝑡 + 2)𝑢(𝑡 − 2) = (−𝑡 + 2) +
−1! 1 −1 2 1
(𝑡 − 2)𝑢(𝑡 − 2) → 𝐹2 (𝑠) = 1+1 + 2 ( ) + 𝑒 −2𝑠 𝐹(𝑠) = 2 + + 𝑒 −2𝑠 ( 2)
𝑠 𝑠 𝑠 𝑠 𝑠
Therefore, we can conclude that:
1 𝑒 −2𝑠 −1 2 1
𝑌(𝑠) = 𝑓1 (𝑡) ∗ 𝑓2 (𝑡) = 𝐹1 (𝑠). 𝐹2 (𝑠) = 2( − )( 2 + + 𝑒 −2𝑠 ( 2 ))
𝑠 𝑠 𝑠 𝑠 𝑠
, making it much easier to multiply in s-domain than convoluting in time domain.
