Who I am

Amber Qu
Who I am Who I Was Who I Want to Be is a Who I am
series of 9 images that reflects on my personal Who I Was
philosophy as an artist. I have a background
in studio fine art, where creating 1-to-1 copies
Who I Want to Be
of the world around me was considered the
highest form of art and hyper-realism was
praised. As I found my own artistic voice, I
became obsessed with the idea of “fantasy”,
of breaking out of reality yet my training in
realism seemed to remain in every piece I
make.

I believe it is important as an artist to not be

afraid to let go of the rules of realism to
properly express creativity. The realization
that I had been using my technical skill as an
excuse to not be creative spurred me to focus
on exploring gradual abstraction through
glitches with this piece.

Reflection Who I am
The project evolved drastically from its
Who I Was
original idea as I found meaning in the Who I Want to Be
process of creating the work. Throughout the
project, the concept of glitch and how it tears
away an image that I had so meticulously
sculpted to create something new and of
equal value was refreshing. Purposefully
disturbing my digital work with digital
glitches was something I had never thought to
do before.

Throughout the process, I became familiar

with manipulating the hex code editor &
learned how to use Blender from ground zero.
I also feel as if my approach to art has shifted
to be more open minded.
