Mississippi Humanities Council Faculty of the Year Rust College associate professor of music, Dr. Sylvester Oliver, Jr. has been named as the 2011 Mississippi Humanities Faculty of the Year for Rust College. He was elected by the Mississippi Humanities Council, who chooses one faculty member at each higher education institution in the state. He was chosen based on his outstanding accomplishments and contributions to Rust College. Dr. Oliver will give a speech on "Ida B. Wells Digital Research Project: Its Importance in a Digital Age. He will deliver his presentation at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 in Heard Auditorium of the McCartyVarnell B.C.S. Building on the campus of Rust College. A reception and refreshments will follow.

The National Collegiate Scouting Association is hiring! Due to the growing popularity of NCSA and the Athletic Recruiting Network, we are looking to hire indefinitely for the 2012 year. NCSA is looking for competitive, driven, hard working, former athletes to join our team! NCSA Career recruiters are going to be offering a series of Holiday Interview open office events for all interested candidates here in our Chicago offices. In this talk, I will discuss Ida B. Wells and her legacy as a native of Holly Division of Humanities Chair; 2011 Mississippi Humanities Springs and how the project is designed to collect text and images on Council Faculty of the Year African-Americans in North Mississippi, says Dr. Oliver. He says he will discuss the goals of this project as funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C. as a two-year project. He will share where the project is presently and how a digital repository and website is being developed as part of the research project. Dr. Oliver, Chair of the Division of Humanities and is an avid researcher on African-American history and music in Mississippi. He is the author of Hidden Chronicles and numerous articles on AfricanAmerican history in Marshall County, Mississippi. He is currently finishing a history on African Americans in Holly Springs and Marshall County as part of a historical series.

In Sympathy
The Rust College family extends its condolences to Dr. Sylvester Oliver, on the death of his father Rev. Sylvester Oliver, Sr., who was funeralized Wednesday, October 26. Rust College also expresses sympathy to Dr. Nellie J. Smith, on the loss of her brother, Lynn T. Johnson, of Meridian, Mississippi. Mr. Johnson will be funeralized Saturday, October 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Enterprise Funeral Home in Meridian.

8th Annual Mass Communications Week Welcomes Back Alumni


The Division of Humanities and the Department of Mass Communications held its annual Mass Communications Week October 24-28, with several alumni returning to the college to speak to current students. The week kicked off with a tour of Rust College media facilitiesthe studios of RC TV 2 and WURC-FM 88.5. Several area high school students were able to get a firsthand look at the equipment it takes to make both stations run properly. The rest of the week was full of presentations with subjects on graduate school, creative writing, and publishing.

LOAN DISBURSEMENTS For students who have less than 30 hours, loans will be disbursed to the College in two equal payments for the fall and spring semesters on the following dates:

The Mass Communications department was thrilled to welcome back Ms. Zondra Hughes, 94, who was the keynote speaker for the Mass Communications Assembly held Thursday, October 28. Hughes encourages students to get to know themselves in order to know how they want to execute their future careers. Former students Katrina Overby, 09, Gaby Crumble, 09, Meghann Oglesby, 09, Jessica McMorris, 09 and David Burnett, 09, were panelists in a discussion on The Graduate School Experience: What it Takes!, held October 25.

REFUNDS If the student account shows a credit balance after a payment has been applied to the students college expenses (tuition, room and board, etc.), a refund check will then be issued to the student no later than 14 days after the credit balance has been noted. Students MUST be enrolled in at least six hours each module at the time refund checks are disbursed.

Rust College Welcomes Guests for African Culture Program


Rust College hosted an African Musical and Culture Program October 26, 2011 in Heard Auditorium. The Division of Social Science welcomed Mr. Guelel Kumba and Ms. Chandra Williams, who played African traditional music and explained the continuities related to contemporary music and explained the negative stereotypes associated with being of the black race.

Love Program to Benefit Mrs. Shirley Dillard
