Chapter-3

Theoretical Framework

3.1 Deposit

A Deposit is a financial transaction in which a person or entity places money into a bank

account. This process involves the transfer of funds from the depositor to the bank, with the

expectation that the deposited amount can be withdrawn or accessed at a later time. Bank

deposits are a fundamental component of the banking system and play a crucial role in the

overall economy.

Depositors use bank accounts to safeguard their money, earn interest, and facilitate

transactions. By depositing money into a bank, individuals and businesses can keep their

funds in a secure place, access banking services, and potentially earn interest on their

balances. Some types of bank deposits, such as savings accounts and CDs, may accrue

interest over time. The bank compensates depositors with interest payments as a reward for

keeping their money in the bank. The interest rates can vary based on the type of account and

prevailing market conditions. Deposits are generally considered safe because they are often

backed by government deposit insurance, which protects depositors up to a certain amount in

case the bank encounters financial difficulties. In the United States, for example, the Federal

Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insures deposits in member banks. Deposits contribute

to the overall functioning of the economy by providing a stable source of funds for banks to

lend to individuals, businesses, and other entities. This lending, in turn, supports economic

growth and development.

In summary, a deposit involves placing money into a bank account for safekeeping, potential

interest earnings, and the convenience of conducting financial transactions. It serves as a

14 | P a g e
foundational element in the financial system, supporting economic activities and providing a

secure environment for individuals and businesses to manage their funds.

3.2 Deposit Schemes

Deposit schemes refer to various financial products or plans offered by banks and financial

institutions to attract deposits from individuals, businesses, and other entities. These schemes

are designed to cater to the diverse needs and preferences of depositors while providing them

with opportunities to earn interest on their deposited funds. Different types of deposit
