3. On and Nous
In French, we use a subject pronoun that doesn’t exist in English. On is the equivalent of nous (we)
but it is conjugated like he or she, as a singular pronoun. On is the casual nous, nous being more
often used for formal speaking and writing.
4. Il and elle
As I said earlier, everything in French has a gender, therefore, the neutral doesn’t exist. Only Il (he)
and Elle (she) is used for everything and everyone.
5. Silent letters
As you will see in the pronunciation videos, written French and spoken French look like two different
languages. The main reason is because French has a lot of silent letters. We will see them in the
pronunciation lessons.
6. The sounds
French has a lot of specific sounds made of 2 or more letters. While in English most letters are
pronounced individually, French uses specific sounds for each letter combination.
7. The liaisons
A final note about pronunciation is the liaisons. When hearing French, you might think that some
sounds appear out of nowhere between two words. This is what is called “une liaison”. We use them
to have a better flow of pronunciation.

How to study?
This is a question that I have gotten from people of all ages and all backgrounds. I tried to find the
best way to study for everyone many times. Until I realized that I have no answer for it, besides
studying the way that works for you. We have all been to school for many years, studied for many
hours, and most likely develop a method that works for us.
I personally have a photographic memory and have found that writing and reading were the best
practices when learning a language. This is the way I was taught at school, and it still worked when I
decided to learn English as an adult.
Where to start?
All the lessons suggested in this self-study guide are my own and follow my 4 books:
The Complete French Pronunciation Course The Complete French Grammar Course
The Complete French Conjugation Course The Complete French Vovabulary Course
The videos are free to watch but the accompanying audio and exercises are only available if you
purchase the books. Click on each of the titles to find out how to get them as a paperback, a PDF, or
as an eBook.

French pronunciation
The first thing that you should study is pronunciation. As said earlier in the most important rules to
remember, written French and spoken French are like two different languages.
But why?
Learning the pronunciation rules, how the spelling impacts the pronunciation and vice versa, will give
you a great foundation. You will be able to connect spoken French and written French. Do not pass
up this opportunity to make your French learning easier.
In this self-study guide, I combined both courses to create what I believe is the simplest path to learn
French. In doing so, you will get the chance to learn in detail every aspect of French grammar and
French conjugation.

- Le futur simple – The future tense
- Le futur proche – The near future
- Le conditionnel présent – The present conditional
- L’impératif – The imperative
- Le subjonctif – The subjunctive
- Le plus-que-parfait – The pluperfect
- Le futur antérieur – The future perfect

- La voix passive – The passive voice
In the second part of this self-study guide (grammar and conjugation), I will walk through all the
tenses you need to learn.
French vocabulary
Vocabulary is a very specific subject. I made a course/book about all the subjects you need and
could need. Incorporate it slowly into your learning journey or tackle it all at once. The choice is
yours.
But no matter how you learn, always study French by word families (I wrote a dictionary with this
method), this will multiply your vocabulary in no time!
Without further ado, here is your self-study list of all the lessons you will need to reach a good
fluency in French.

LET'S PRACTICE MORE
Some subjects seem to be trickier for most students. I have a series (in the making) of smaller
textbooks to focus on specific subjects. The first one being Passé composé vs Imparfait.

Read what you enjoy. Even a book that you read in English and you enjoyed, try re-reading it in
French. I am a big fan of Harry Potter and I read them all in English as soon as I felt confident
enough to do so. Click on the book to access it.
