PMAL101: Cross-Cultural Communication

Unit 8: Theories and Research in Cross-Cultural
Communication

What do you understand about how people think and behave across cultural contexts?

Refer to Figure 2.3 found in this chapter (or within the Resources tab in this activity) and
provide your views or personal experiences on how people behave in high vs. low cultural
contexts.
Response:

People's thinking and actions differ across cultures based on how they see and communicate with
various dimensions such as time, space, communications, rewards, emotions, information, regulation.
Differences can manifest in communication styles, social customs, and decision - making processes.
Understanding cultural diversity requires empathy, open-mindedness, and respect for differences.
High-context cultures, such as those characterized by multichronicity, communication is indirect,
depending on shared understanding and group behavior, while emotions are expressed openly and
authority is respected. On the other hand, low context cultures prioritize direct communication and
individuality. Low context also rely on written codes and fair decision making. Conflicts are confronted
openly, understanding these cultural variations causes empathy and improves efficient communication,
hence increasing teamwork and respect amongst individuals with diverse backgrounds.
