PMAL101: Cross-Cultural Communication

Unit 8: Theories and Research in Cross-Cultural
Communication

What do you understand about how people think and behave across cultural contexts?

Refer to Figure 2.3 found in this chapter (or within the Resources tab in this activity) and
provide your views or personal experiences on how people behave in high vs. low
cultural contexts.
Response:

Cultural anthropologist Edward T. Hall is credited with developing the concept of cultural context. His
idea states that the context of an event describes its stimuli, surroundings, and ambiance. Situational
context plays a smaller role in the meaning-transmission process in low-context civilizations. They
believe the audience to be credulous and in need of additional justification. In addition to verbal clues,
nonverbal cues, social cues, bodily cues, and interpersonal interactions are highly valued in high-
context cultures. Gestures, facial expressions, voice intonation, body language, and body actions are all
used as communication tools in high-context societies. Building relationships is crucial for participation
and communication.
