Ìforítì lẹbọ (Endurance is the sacrifice)


Ní ayé àtijọ́ , ogun àti ọtẹ̀ pọ̀ ní ilẹ̀ Yorùbá.

In the olden days, war and rebellion are common in Yorùbá

Idí nìyí tí ó fi jẹ́ pé àwọn alágbára ló máa ń joyè nígbà náà.

This is why warriors are always in ruling position back then.

Kì í ṣe pé Ọba ìlú gbọ́ dò jẹ́ alágbára nìkan,

Kings of the town must not be warrior alone,

ṣùgbọ́ n ó tún gbọ́ dọ̀ ní àwọn alágbára ní ọ̀ dọ̀ .


but he must have warriors around him.

Àwọn àgbà ní, 'Láti kékeré ni Músùlùmí ti máa n kọ́ ọmọ rè lásọ̀ '.

The elders say, 'Muslims train their children how to worship from infancy'

Bẹ́ẹ̀ gẹ́gẹ́ ló ṣe jẹ́ pé láti kékere ni àwọn òbí ti máa ń fi ìwà akínkanjú àti Ìforítì kọ́
àwọn ọmọ wọn.

Exactly how it is that it is from childhood that parents teach their children heroic
character and being able to endure.

Irú ẹ̀kọ́ báyìí tí wọ́ n tilẹ̀ máa ń fún àwọn ọmọ-ọba tún le díẹ̀ ju ti àwọn yòókù lọ.

This kind of lesson is even more difficult for princes than the rest of the
individuals.

Ṣé abẹ́ l̀lú Ọba aládé ni l̀lú Katèé ti wà tẹ́lẹ̀.

It is under the authority of a king that Katèé town belongs to.

Adéwùmí ló kó àwọn ọmo ̣ogun jọ tí ó sì jagun gba ìlú náà sílẹ̀.

Adéwùmi was the one that took the warriors to war to liberate the town

Kíá ni wọ́ n sì ti fi jọba.

Instantly, they made him king.

Kò túra sílẹ̀ lẹ́yìn tí ó gorí oyè tán.

He doesn't tolerate nonsense after he landed on the throne.

Kíkọ́ ló túbọ̀ ń kọ́ àwọn ọ̀ dọ́ ní iṣẹ́ ogun.

He continued training the youths the work of being a warior.

Ṣùgbọ́ n kò fẹ́ẹ́ kẹ́ àwọn ọmọkùnrin mẹ́ta tí Ọlọ́ run fún òun alára.
But he does not want to pamper his three male children God gave him.

Ó fi àwọn ọmọ náà ránṣẹ́ sí Ọba ìlú Aríọrí.

He sent them to the king of Ariori town.

Alágbára ìlú gidi ni Aríọrí jẹ́ ní ayé àtijọ́ .

Ariori was a powerful town in the olden days.

Ṣaṣà ni ìlú tí í fẹ́ bá Aríọrí jagun.

It's rare to see any town that is ready to fight with Ariori.

Kò sì sí nñkan méjì ti ó sọ ìlú Aríọrí di alágbára bí kò ṣe ọ̀ nà tí wọn ń gbà kọ́ àwọn
ọmọ-ogun wọn ní iṣé.

There's no other two things that made Ariori town powerful than the way they
teach their fighter the work.

Ẹ̀ kọ́ sé ogun máa ń gbà tó odidi ọdún mẹ́ta ní ìlú Aríori.

Learning how to fight at war requires three years in Ariori town.

Yet where they are sleeping is not good enough.

Ítalẹ̀ àti yànmuyánmú máa ń fojú wọn han èèmọ̀ .

Ants and mosquitoes disturbs them a lot.

Ọ̀ pọ̀ ìgbà ni wón si máa ń pàṣẹ kí àwọn tó wà lẹ́nu ìkọ́ ṣẹ́ bá ẹranko Iíle bíi ẹkùn àti
kìnnìún jà.

Many times they are instructed to fight animals.

Púpọ̀ àwọn tí kò ní agbára, ìforítì àti ìgboyà máa ń kú kí odun mẹ́ta tóó pé.

Most of those who do not have enough strength, endurance and courage usually
die before it’s up to three years.

Nígbà tí ọdún kẹta yóò fi pé, ọ̀ kan ti kú nínú àwọn ọmọ Ọba Adéwùmí.

When it about to reach three years, one out of the king’s children is already dead.

ọ̀ kan tilè sá kúrò, bàbá sì kọ̀ ọ́ ní ọmọ.

One ran away and his father disowned him.

Adéníyà nìkan ni ó parí ẹ̀kọ́ sẹ́ náà.


Adéníyà alone finished the training.

Kódà àwọn ará ìlú Aríọri kò fẹ́ fi í sílẹ̀ nítorí pé jagunjagun tí kò ní àfijọ níí ṣe.

Even people of Ariori don’t want to let him go because his kind of warrior can'’t
be compared.

Ìgbà tí Ọba Adéwùmí wàjà ni wọ́ n tóó ránṣẹ́ lọọ mú un pé kí ó wáá jọba.

It was when king Adéwùmí died that he was sent for to enthrone him as king.

Kò sì fẹ́ẹ́ wá. Iṣẹ́ ogun tẹ́ ẹ lọ́ rùn ju ipò Ọba lọ.

He does not want to come. He’s satisfied with being a warrior than the king’s
throne.

Ṣùgbọ́ n lẹ́yìn ọ̀ pọ̀ lọpọ̀ ẹ̀bè, ó gbà láti jọba.

But after pleading with him, he agreed

Lọ́ jọ́ ìwúyè rẹ̀ ló rọ gbogbo ọ̀ dọ́ láti ní ẹ̀mí l̀forítì àti ìwà akínkanjú.

On his coronation day, he implores all the youths to have the spirit of endurance
and heroic character.

Ó ròyìn bí l̀yà ṣe jẹ òun lẹ́nu ìkọ́ ṣẹ́ oló́ gun ní Aríọrí.

He relates how he suffered during the warrior training in Ariori.

Ó ṣàlàyé bí ó ṣe jẹ́ àwọn mẹ́ta ni ọmọ Ọba Adéwúmi tí wọ́ n fi sí ẹnu ìkọ́ ṣẹ́ ní ìlú
Aríọrí àti bí ó ṣe jẹ́ pé àìní-ìforítì àti àìní ìwà-akin ló pa ọ̀ kan tí ó sì lé ìkejì kúrò
nibẹ̀.

He explained how the three children of King Adewumi were sent for the training in
Ariori town and how lethargy and being a coward got one killed and the other ran
away.
Ó ní òun di Ọba nípasẹ̀ àtìlẹyìn Ọlọ́ run àti ìwà akínkanjú pẹ̀lú ẹ̀mi ìforítì tí òun ní.

He said he became King by the support of God and his heroic character with the
spirit of endurance he has.
