Biography Project

Big Idea: Developing our understanding of how language works allows us to use it
purposefully.
Assignment: Students will choose a “role model” to read about, then create a report to
share with a peer audience.
Process for Writing Outline:
1. Read an entire article about the subject.
2. Write 3 main facts from the article on your graphic organizer.
3. Read a second entire article about the subject.
4. Add facts or details from the second article to your graphic organizer.
5. Complete the graphic organizer to clearly show 3 main fact, each with supporting
details.
Process for Writing Draft:
1. Write an original opening sentence that states the most interesting thing.
2. Write an introduction paragraph that lists the 3 facts briefly.
3. For each fact, write a paragraph that states the fact and supports it with details.
4. Paraphrase the facts from research- summarize in your own words.
o Extending: Use quotation marks to keep key words and opinions of reputable
people. Put the source of the quote at the end of the paragraph.
5. Compose an original conclusion sentence that sums-up what was said.
o Extending: Build-up your information to create one paragraph per fact, and
extend this into an essay.
Process for Editing:
1. Page organization: you have a title and your name at the top, your paragraphs are
arranged on the page without additional spaces
2. Capitalization: names, place names, companies; all proper nouns are capitalized
3. Punctuation: all sentences are punctuated. (Don’t address the reader!)
4. Correct spelling: Canadian, correct homophones, etc. Do not ignore spellcheck.
5. Use a variety of compound and complex sentences to avoid repetition.
Process for Revising:
1. The introduction ideas are all followed-up with details
2. The introduction and the conclusion are similar
3. Use a variety of sentence starters- not repetitive
4. Use a variety of sentence structures: simple, compound, and complex
5. Use engaging, interesting, and challenging vocabulary
