Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

Today’s inflation rate is not decreasing instead, it is continuously rising which affects

our daily expenses. As the researcher, a student, experiencing a high inflation rate in

the Philippines, students are having trouble budgeting their educational expenses from

uniforms, food, and transportation. According to Edufund (2022), these days, inflation

affects the cost of everything we buy, even the school supplies we require. Inflation is

one of the major factors driving price increases in the education sector. As a result, it is

getting harder and harder for the average parent to pay for his child's education as the

price of uniforms, textbooks, tuition, meals, and transportation expenses rise. In the

Philippines, the average inflation rate during 2022 was 5.8 percent, which was higher

than the average inflation rate of 3.9 percent for 2021, According to the Philippine

statistics authority (2023). President Bongbong Marcos has expressed worry over the

financial difficulties affecting Filipinos, “Inflation is running rampant and out of

control,” he said recently.

This study is to inform both students and the government on how a high inflation rate

may affect students' costs. This will enable students to plan their spending sensibly and

the government to act or to make solutions to decrease the pace of the inflation rate.

1
In the present, the researcher is a student in a nation where a high rate of inflation is

influencing the cost of attending school. In this study, we will examine how the

inflation rate contributes to the cost of attending school for the students at Tomas

Cabili National High School. It is a public school in Iligan City where most enrollees

are from financially unstable families who are having a hard time sustaining the

student’s needs.

1.2 Conceptual Framework

The figure above shows that In the first table which is the input it shows what

independent variables the researcher needs to use for collecting data, administering

questionnaires, and analyzing data to know the perception of the students on the inflation

rate and how it affects them. After doing the process, the output shows what possible

2
solutions the researcher could give the students regarding the issue about the high

inflation rate affecting their school expenses.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to discover their perception about

the inflation rate and its effects of it on the school expenses of students enrolled in

Tomas Cabili National High School for the school year 2022-2023. In this research, the

effect of the inflation rate defines how students' expenditures will be affected.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the students’ perceptions of high inflation in the country?

2. How does the inflation rate affect senior high school students’ expenditures?

3. How do the students budget their allowances in the midst of high inflation?

1.4 Significance of the Study

The purpose of this study is to discover the effects of high inflation in the

students’ expenses. Moreover, this study is beneficial to the following:

Students. The results of this study will assist the students in strengthening their

ability to stick to a budget during periods of high inflation and may also make them

aware of how high inflation affects their spending.

Future researcher. They can use this study as a guide if they want to conduct a

similar study on the effects of high inflation on students.

3
Government. It will enable them to comprehend how a high inflation rate affects

the students so that they may take appropriate measures to lower the inflation rate.

1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study

The goal of the study is to determine how the high inflation rate has affected the

selected senior high school pupils. The researchers are curious to know how these

pupils manage or budget their school allowances during periods of high inflation. The

researcher also wants the students’ perception of high inflation rates.

The basis for the perception of students on the high inflation rate and how it affects

them shall be limited only to the opinions and experiences of selected students, other

factors not stated in this section are beyond the scope of this study. As such, only 10

students that are in Senior High School are the subjects of this research. Also, giving

surveys to these students will be used to collect data.

1.6 Definition of Terms

Budgeting - In this study, this term refers to your plan for spending money.

Educational expenses - This term in the study refers to the money you spent on
educational purposes.

Inflation rate - In this study, this refers to the rate at which prices increase over a
specific period of time

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Related Literature

According to Mapa (2023), It was reported that January was the fastest rate

which has 11.1 percent, since the 9.1 percent on November 2020 and it also exceeded

the 8.1 percent inflation rate in December 2022, which was thought to be the top, and

was almost three times as quick as the 3 percent recorded a year earlier. These are the

major contributors to why inflation in January went faster than in December (Mapa,

2023):

1. Housing rentals. In January the rentals increased up to 5 percent which was

faster than in December where the rise was up to 4 percent only.

2. Price of electricity. Compared to January 2022, electricity prices increased by

22%, a greater increase than the 20% increase in December.

3. Food and non-alcoholic beverages. Prices for this category of items increased

by 11% in January, accounting for 30% of overall inflation.

We all know that living has become so expensive and that the importance of money

each day is increasing according to Archana (2017). And students are given an allowance

for school spending. Allowance is the money that is given by a parent or guardian for the

daily expenses of the students and to teach them how to budget or handle money (Galulu,

et al., 2017). High inflation drives up the price of essentials for students like
5
accommodation, food, and transportation, making it harder for them to save money,

(Bushra, 2022). So, here are some budgeting tips for students according to Mapua (2016):

1. Separate Wants from Needs. Keeping track of your expenses help you in

knowing what’s your need from your wants.

2. Include Savings in Your Budget Expenses. One advantage of budgeting is that

you continue to save up. Determine how much money you want to save each

month and put in under your expenses so it falls under the need section.

3. Keep Everything Organized. Sort all of your bills and receipts according to

category and date of issue. After that, put them in a folder so you can easily

access the information if you need to know your spending patterns.

4. Forgive Yourself If You Slip Up. don’t be too hard on yourself if you slip up

especially when there are times where you suddenly need to pay for something

such as school handouts and when you get extra hungry, etc. itis okay just do

better next time.

2.2 Related Study

This study focuses on the student’s perception of the inflation rate, and a study

conducted by Quaiyyum and Udoy (2021) entitled “People’s perception of inflation

rate” is related. Their study's goal is to gain a deeper knowledge of how people

understand inflation. Finding out how people view inflation is crucial since it could

influence the rate of inflation in the future. They gave surveys to those who have an

education background in economics and those who don’t. Two of their main questions

6
are whether they are aware of the occurrence of regular inflation or not, the causes of

inflation, and whether or not Bangladesh's economy should remain in an inflationary

state in the future. Based on their results they found out that the majority of the

respondents’ opinions of high inflation are based on the poor leadership and dishonest

trading practices used by merchants for various parties. They didn’t discover any

significant differences regarding the causes of inflation on people with or without prior

economics expertise. Their conduct is similar, but not quite. People with prior

experience in economics are generally fairly unaware of the factors that cause inflation

to rise or fall. However, overall, the majority of respondents believe that a little

increase in commodity prices is beneficial for Bangladesh's economy.

The citation above and the mentioned aims are similar to this study which aims to

know the students’ perception of the inflation rate. The only gaps in this research are

the respondents, research design, settings and unlike the related study which focused

on the people’s perception of the inflation rate in Bangladesh, this study focuses on the

perceptions of the students in Tomas Cabili National High School on the inflation rate

in the country and how it affects their expenditures.

RESEARCH METHODS

3.1 Research Design

This study used a phenomenological study. The researcher chose to use a

phenomenological study to know the experiences of the students from Tomas Cabili

National High School about how it affects their expenditures while living in a country

where inflation is high. The study applied a narrative method to analyze the knowledge

of selected students about inflation in our country and how it affects them. This will

allow the researchers to have a more in-depth understanding of the data collected.

3.2 Participants/Subject of the Study

The sample for the study in choosing participants was created through the use of

convenience sampling. This method is a non-probability sampling where the researcher

chooses the participants based on their availability and willingness to take part in this

study. The participants are senior high school students from the academic track and

from Tomas Cabili National High School. Each participant signed a consent form that

was fully carried out prior to conducting the gathering of data.

3.3 Setting of the Study

This study takes place in Tomas Cabili National High School, Iligan City. Tomas

Cabili National High School was founded in 1971. The school was chosen since the

8
population they are finding are senior high school students of Tomas Cabili National

High School who have an idea about the inflation rate and how it affects them.

Moreover, the researchers decided upon conducting the research in Tomas Cabili

National High School to study further how the students’ expenditures got affected by

the high inflation.

Figure 3.3.1

3.4 Research Instrument

In this study, the researcher used surveys to collect data. The questionnaires are a

set of open-ended questions that are prepared to be answered only by the selected

participants of this study that are used to collect information and gather data. The type

of questions in the survey used is the subjective type since the respondents are free to

share or give their own opinions about the issue or the question.

9
3.5 Data Gathering Procedure

Before the researcher gathered the data they prepared a set of open-ended

questions for the survey they are going to give to the participants of the study. They

handed out a consent form for the participants to ensure that they are voluntarily

participating in the study. The questions from the survey comprise what they think of

the high inflation in the country, how they budget their allowance, and the factors that

affected their spending due to high inflation. After the respondents answered the

survey, their answers were collected, checked, interpreted, and analyzed.

3.6 Data Analysis

Thematic analysis was the method used to analyze the collected data which are

gathered from the survey given to the respondents. Thematic analysis is the process of

identifying patterns or themes within qualitative data, Braun & Clarke (2006). This

approach is used because it is more easily accessible, particularly for individuals who

are just beginning their research. The advantage of using this method is that it helps the

researcher comprehend every aspect of a phenomenon that participants mention

frequently and as well as the possible relationships between those aspects of a

phenomenon.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

4.1 Introduction

This study aims to know the perception of the Grade 11 Students on the Inflation

rate and how it affected their school expenditures. Specifically, this research tries to

discover the perception of students regarding the high inflation rate in the country, the

factors that got affected by high inflation that affected the students’ expenditures, and

how they budget their allowance in the midst of high inflation.

4.2 Demographic of the Respondents

The researcher conducted a survey which was done through the use of Google form

to collect the data. This was used as a medium to assess the respondents. The researcher

was able to reach 10 respondents who were able to provide the data necessary for

analysis and findings for this research study. All of the respondents were Grade 11 from

Tomas Cabili National Highschool and they were picked based on how easily the

researcher could access the respondents since the researcher used a convenience sampling

non-probability sampling design.

respondents are from and the number of respondents in each strand that participated in

the study.

4.3 Research Findings

The researchers used a thematic analysis to analyze the data. The researchers selected

this approach as it places a strong emphasis on locating, examining, and interpreting

patterns in this study. This method will help the researchers put more focus on the study

conducted as well as allow them to closely evaluate and interpret the meaning patterns

within the qualitative data.

Table 4.3.1 shows how the students perceived Inflation in the country. The table also

answered the research question which is “What are the students’ perceptions of high

inflation in the country?”. According to the responses, they expressed that the High

Inflation in our country affects the lives of the people, a big problem, and they are having

difficulty saving money. Mapa (2023) mentioned that food and non-alcoholic beverages

increased by 11% in January, accounting for 30% of overall inflation, where the

respondents also said that goods are getting more expensive which is a reason why people

are having difficulty saving up. The respondents also expressed that the government

should increase the wages of the workers. According to Beltran (2023) As the expense of

living continues to increase. Since June of last year, the Philippines has been dealing with

significant inflationary pressures. Workers are urging the government to raise salaries

nationwide in light of rising prices for necessities because earnings have remained flat

despite this significant growth.

Table 4.3.2 shows how the inflation rate affected the students’ expenditures. This

table answers the research question “How does the inflation rate affect the senior high

school students’ expenditures?”. According to the responses, the factors that affected the

students’ expenditure are the jeepney fare which increased after the continuing rise in oil

prices in the country, and petitions by public transport groups, (Dela Cruz, 2022). And the

respondents also said that necessities, school supplies, and also allowances getting cut

down due to lack of income by the parents are the factors that affect their expenditures.

Table 4.3.3 shows the ways how students budget their allowance in the midst of high

inflation. This table answers the research question “How do the students budget their

allowances in the midst of high inflation?”. The given data above shows that saving the

left allowance for the day, bringing own food to school, calculating the expenses for the

day buying what one needs before one wants helps the students' budget properly, also

18
according to Mapua (2016), keeping track of your expenses helps you in knowing what’s

your need from your wants. But according to the responses some are not really able to

budget because they only have money for the bus or jeepney fare and according to

Bushra(n.d), High inflation drives up the price of essentials for students like

accommodation, food, and transportation, making it harder for them to save money.

Chapter 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 Summary

The main purpose of this study is to know the perception of students and how it

affects their school expenditures. The aim of this study is to know the students’

knowledge about the inflation rate in the country, how it affected their school

expenditures, and how the students budget their allowances in the middle of high

inflation in the country.

In order to collect the appropriate data from our respondents for this study, we

utilized a sampling strategy known as convenience non-probability sampling. The

factor in deciding to use this type of sample method for this study was the fact that the

subjects of this research study needed Grade 11, students. Who were picked based on

the researcher’s convenience and the willingness of the participant to participate in the

study. According to the corresponding literature and studies that the researcher

gathered, the perceived effects of the high inflation rate on the students' expenditures

are greatly affected due to the rise of prices over the given period of time such as

jeepney fare and other necessities.

The researcher used a virtual survey form called Google Forms as a medium to

gather data from the respondents. It took 2 days to gather the necessary data from the

participants. The researcher used thematic analysis to analyze the collected data.

20
Findings

The following findings are obtained based on the analysis and interpretation of

data.

1. The students expressed their views on the high rate of inflation in our country,

saying that it is a significant issue that has a big effect on the people due to the

increased costs of goods and services and that the government should increase the

salaries of workers since it is not in line with the increased of inflation.

2. The students expressed that the perceived effect of high inflation on their spending

is crucial since, in their experience, a variety of things, including the cost of

necessities, school supplies, and public transportation, were also heavily affected

by the high inflation.

3. The students expressed that their method of budgeting in an environment of high

inflation involves placing needs before wants and refraining from buying food at

school. And some of the students expressed that their allowances, which are only

for transportation, prevent them from being able to effectively budget.

5.2 Conclusions

Based on the findings above, the following conclusions are drawn:

1. According to the participants of the study and from the findings above it shows

that the students are well aware of the inflation in our country and they all see it as

a serious problem in the country.

21
2. The research findings show that high inflation in the country had a significant

effect on students' spending because of the increase in prices.

3. The students budget their allowances by putting their needs first before wants and

some students are not really able to budget since their allowances are only for their

transportation

5.3 Recommendations

As synthesized from the findings and conclusions, the following

recommendations were made:

1. To the Students, it is recommended to learn and be aware of what state the country

is in, specifically when it comes to the rising inflation in the country to be able to

know how to save and manage money properly

2. To Future Researchers, it is recommended to do a similar study but with a larger

number of participants and consider how much allowance they receive to know

how it differs from the students’ budgeting method.

3. To the Government, it is recommended to study how high inflation badly affects

the students’ expenditures which could be a hindrance to the students’ education

and to start thinking of solutions on how to support the students or how to decrease

the flow of inflation in the country.
