(timings mentioned above are approximate)Indrajit Sen was born on October 8, 1938, to Dr. Sachikanta Sen and Snehalata
Sen in Kolkata.
As a young boy, Sen lived a richly varied and itinerant life across cities like
Lucknow and Gorakhpur, thanks to his father’s service in the Army Medical
Corps. He returned to Calcutta for his early education and later graduated in
Economics from Ashutosh College before pursuing a post-graduate degree in
Economics from Calcutta University. Sen began his career as an economics
teacher but kept returning to the interest he had developed in law during his
university days, eventually studying the subject formally.
In 1967, he stepped into the legal arena, joining the chambers of the esteemed
former Advocate General Naranarayan Gooptu. Sen’s sharp legal mind and
unyielding commitment to justice swiftly garnered the admiration of peers and
seniors alike. Over five decades, his nuanced handling of cases and wisdom in
the interpretation of the law has left an indelible mark on the legal landscape.
Sen's exemplary legal acumen was officially recognized when he was
appointed to the position of Additional Government Pleader in the West
Bengal government, followed by his appointment as Standing Counsel. His
involvement in high-profile cases often required him to travel to New Delhi,
where he played a key role in overseeing important matters at the Supreme
Court of India. The Shambu Sarkar MISA case, the Ananda Margi case, and the
Statesman Union case were some prominent matters.
Sen's commitment to justice was not confined to the courtroom. A member of
the Communist Party of India (Marxist), he tirelessly championed the rights of
the marginalized and the disempowered. Supported by a dedicated team of
assistants, including his trusted clerks Anwar Ali Khan and Arun Dey, he worked
to ensure that justice remained accessible to all.
Despite a busy legal career, he worked closely with Dr. Joyce Shiromoni, the
founder of Paripurnata, a Half-Way Home that provided quality care and
rehabilitation facilities to mentally ill women who had been abandoned by
their families, In 2003, with Justice Shyamal Sen and Justice GN Roy, he was
one of the High Court-appointed officials overseeing the running of the Mohun
Bagan Club.
Outside the courtroom, Sen also passionately engaged in social and cultural
pursuits, participating in debates, plays, and classical music events. He was also
actively associated with a range of socio-cultural bodies, among them Darbari,an organization promoting Hindustani classical music where he was involved
from his university days.
In his personal life, Sen found solace, companionship, and shared values in his
beloved wife, Rama Sen, a professor at Calcutta University, who preceded him
in death in 1995. Their son, Arijt, is a journalist and human rights activist.
Indrajit Sen's demise leaves a void in the legal fraternity and the hearts of all
who knew him. His legacy of integrity, compassion, and unwavering
commitment to justice will continue to inspire generations to come.
