Chapter - 1

INTRODUCTION

As a dedicated student in the realm of Engineering, I find profound satisfaction in

acknowledging that the very essence of the Engineering discipline lies in its noble objective of
serving humanity. This service is manifested through the continuous contribution to the
development of innovative solutions, striving to make daily life not only more efficient but also
considerably more comfortable. However, with this inherent goal of Engineering comes the
compelling responsibility to extend its benefits to society at large, addressing community-level
challenges. Against this backdrop, a conceptual vision emerged to embark on a small-scale
project titled "To acquaint with social work related to the wellbeing of elderly people with
special reference to the underprivileged and elderly women within society." The systematic
programming of this project aimed to yield tangible results within a stipulated timeframe,
focusing on a pressing social issue of our time.

Invariably, it has come to our attention that individuals aged 60 and above, classified as senior
citizens, often find themselves in vulnerable situations, requiring fundamental necessities such
as shelter, food, healthcare, and other forms of assistance to lead dignified lives within a
supportive social environment. There are instances where many of them need comprehensive
rehabilitation, warranting careful attention and responsibility. The concept of "Old Age
Home/Old Nursing" emerges as a practical solution, offering a haven for those above 60,
providing them with essential amenities like accommodation, free meals, clothing, medicines,
and other necessities. This becomes especially crucial for those senior citizens who face neglect,
are unable to sustain their livelihoods, or find themselves in a state of helplessness.

The groundwork for this project was laid with a deep understanding of the aforementioned
social problem. The objective was to conduct an in-depth study of the situation, actively
engaging in the process for a defined period to gain a comprehensive understanding of the
entire issue. The project's systematic planning led to the identification of specific objectives, the
outcomes of which are elucidated in the subsequent chapters. Personal involvement in various
activities during the study is recounted in relevant chapters, emphasizing the intersection of
Engineering knowledge in addressing societal challenges. Discussions extend to the feasibility of
future practical projects, providing a thoughtful extrapolation.

Finally, the culmination of this extensive study results in a conclusion drawn from the findings
and observations, encapsulated in the concluding chapter. This holistic exploration underscores
the symbiotic relationship between Engineering expertise and the resolution of intricate social
challenges.

OBJECTIVES

The study will be conducted with the following objectives:

Objective-1:

To search for and find out one nearby Non Governmental Organization (NGO) working purely in
the motive of Social Service relating to the shelter, health care and other related care taking
service of needy underprivileged elderly women of the society.

Objective-2:

To collect and gather preliminary information regarding the ongoing mode of functioning of the
selected NGO.

Objective 3:

To collect the historical basic information about the selected NGO.

Objective 4:

To take part in the day to day activity of the NGO with a motive of self learning for development
of social responsibility in life.

Objective 5:

To take necessary feasible action for helping the NGO in some areas as seem fit to be, during
the training period.

Objective 6:

To find out feasibility of utilising the basic knowledge of Mechanical Engineering to help in
solving minor problems that may come in day to day activities of elderly peoples' life along with
the possibility for planning future project in the line.
