Gilas clenches gold after 67 years

A fter a 67-year drought in the Asian

Games, the Philippines are once
again on top as they defeat the crowd
favorite Jordan in the finals of the 2023
Asian Games last October 6, 2023 at
the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre
Gymnasium.
Four players from Gilas finished with
double digits to bring home the gold, with
Justin Brownlee leading with a double-double
of 20 points, along with 10 rebounds, and five
assists.
Ange Kouame also had his best
performance with a double-double of 14
points, a team high of 11 rebounds, a game
high of five steals. Team captain Chris
Newsome also had a solid game putting up 13
points.
Despite losing Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
led Jordan with a game high of 24 points, 12
rebounds, and five assists with guard Freddy
Ibrahim having 13 points, four rebounds, and
five assists.
The Philippines has reached the finals of
the Asian games for the first time since 1990,
and even winning the Gold medal, ending a
six decade drought for the country.

Once again in the fourth quarter, Gilas
showed ferociousness as they wouldn’t give
up the 10 point lead they have against Jordan,
as Brownlee and the other Gilas members
pushed Jordan to the limit ending the game
with a 10 point deficit. Final score 70-60.
“We played differently than we played the
first time around. We caught Jordan on a bad
shooting night and we were kind of hoping
that they would not shoot the ball well,” Gilas
head coach, Tim Cone stated
Expressing his expression on the win, Cone
stated that the Gilas team saw that Jordan
wasn’t shooting the ball very well, therefore
taking that as an advantage in their part.
The Philippines will now go home with
its fourth gold medal in the Asian Games
following this Gilas win against Jordan.

With the National Academy of Sports
(NAS) being built at the New Clark
City Sports Complex in Capas, Tarlac
for different young athletes with the
dream of being a professional come
true.
The NAS is still under construction
which started last October of 2021
and was originally scheduled to open
in the late of February 2022 which
was delayed due to different circum-
stances according to Wikipedia.org.
The campus is dedicated for different
young athletes having different spec-
ified academic programs according
to their chosen sport.
The programs include Aquatics,
Athletics, Badminton, Gymnastics,
Judo, Table tennis, Taekwondo, and
weightlifting.
“I expect that with this new facilities
and equipments, players will be able
to polish their skills and potentially
become a top sports center.” Samuel
Dilag, an athlete from Cainta stated.
New facilities and personalized
equipments for different sports in
order to improve their skill is what an
athlete residing in Cainta expects for
the new sports academy being built.
“My thoughts about the new sports
academy being built is pretty exciting
as it can be their opportunity to make
a change to their plays.”
A volleyball player from Cainta said.
With new opportunities opening for
upcoming students who want to pur-
sue a career as a professional athlete,
this academy poses excitement for
student athletes for their future en-
deavors.
“The new sports academy sounds
exciting! It’s likely to bring a lot of
opportunities for athletes to train and
develop their skills in a state-of-the-
art facility. With modern equipment
and specialized coaching staff, it
could significantly contribute to the
growth of sports in the community.
I expect it to become a hub for tal-
ent development and a place where

With the new sports academy being
built, students who want to pursue
a professional career on sports can

Crisis not Averted: Sports and
its Lack of Funds

S ports have been a large part
of every Filipino’s lives, to
an extent that almost everyone
knows how to play at least one.
With its popularity comes a
greater ordeal that most athletes
face. In most cases lack of funds
are what drive Filipino athletes
to leave and play for a different
one.
Now, players of Cainta Senior
High School (CSHS) are gear-
ing up for the Municipal Meet
in Cainta which will be held on
January 18 to 23. Related to this,
they wished that the school
would focus more on them and
provide sponsorship since it’s
hard for them to train if there is
none.
Athletes and coaches are
struggling to find a proper ac-
commodation for their train-
ing, especially since there is no
available place for them to train,
where they end up renting one.
Since there is no court inside
the school, students and their
coaches rent outside the school
which they also pay with their
own money.

Cainta Senior High School
(CSHS) mentioned that the prin-
cipal and the school adminis-
tration gives them a budget but
it is only given when they ask.
When it comes to their expens-
es, they budget what they have

in their hand which only covers
the court fee and not the other
expenses they tend to.
Since their training is starting
to get hectic with the basketball
team with training that is going
to be thrice a week as Sir Ru-
bymar Fejer stated. This means
that they need to bear a lot more
expenses than normal. A notable
example of the school’s lack of
funds for sports is when the bas-
ketball team needs to solicit and
go from room to room just to get
the budget they need to have for
them to practice.
On an international set-up Mi-
chael Martinez, a figure skater
in the Philippines organized a
fundraising campaign for him
to continue training for the 2022
Winter Olympics. Senator Bong
Go also appealed to the govern-
ment to support athletes who
are representing the country.
Although the Philippine Sports
Commission (PSC) has proposed
an increase of 1 billion pesos for
their budget many athletes are
struggling to make ends meet
all over the country.
While the country’s support
system has been doing their
part, the funding for the athletes
and their teams are not enough
for them since their training is
costly which they cannot afford
on their own.

N ot even knowing what soft
ball was, EM Julienne E. Viñas
started her career in sports just like
anyone, trying out for the soft ball
team when she was at the fourth
year of grade school, being a part of
the team even though she had no
knowledge about the sport, but one
thing was for sure, she fell in love
with soft ball.
When she was in her ninth grade,
she was offered to play and go to
school in Manila, but then unexpect-
edly vivid hit, and she was forced to
stop playing, and she focused on her
studies.
That’s when she enrolled at Cainta
Senior High School (CSHS), focusing
on her studies, doubting her skills as
she questions herself if universities

sportsmanship, Cainta Senior High
School (CSHS) athletes emerged vic-
torious at the 2024 municipal meet,
capturing the hearts of spectators
and leaving an indelible mark on the
competition. A total of 96 dedicated
athletes from CSHS showcased their
prowess, bringing home a remarkable
array of medals and accolades.
The Futsal team, aptly named Chap-
erone, secured the silver medal in a
thrilling competition that showcased
their skill and teamwork. Under the
guidance of Coach Ma’am Judy E.
Francisco, the team’s remarkable
achievement garnered admiration
from peers and spectators alike.
Matthew Angelo Sulla emerged as a
badminton star, clinching the gold
medal with an impressive four con-
secutive victories. Sulla’s triumph not
only highlighted his individual skill but
also underscored the effective coach-
ing of Sir Jansen Padasas

She took the risk and did her best in
order for the universities to acknowl-
edge her skills, then UP saw her, they
saw the skill she posed and the de-
termination she had, they took her in,
not knowing that she would soon be
one of the best players on the team.
Because of her alma mater CSHS,
she went through the journey of self
discovery, she had gone through the
challenges, and the obstacles, doubt-
ing herself, but with the help of her
teachers, she found herself to be the
best version of herself.
Now a college athlete in the Uni-
versity of the Philippines, Julienne
faces a different challenge, attending
with a 3-1 victory, earning a well-de-
served spot in the provincial meet.
Their spirited play resonated with the
entire CSHS community, marking a tri-
umph in the world of volleyball.
The Dance Sports team showcased el-
egance and skill, securing silver med-
als invarious categories.
Their outstanding performance in the
Foxtrot, where they claimed the gold,
added a touch of glamour to the over-
all achievement.
Tennis enthusiasts at CSHS had rea-
son to cheer as Jess Rhen Antig
from Grade 11 Cupcake clinched the
gold medal, while Jhon Mark Cortel
secured a silver. These victories un-
derscored the team’s dedication and
talent on the tennis court.

Ancheta displayed remarkable table
tennis prowess, with Mahinay earning
a silver medal in the singles division
and Ancheta securing a bronze.
Meanwhile, the school’s billiards
team, led by John Pol Gimena and
class in the morning, then going to
practice at the afternoon, she faces
challenges of a normal college stu-
dent, with facing the struggles of an
athlete, she is truly a role model to
student athletes.
Thanking her former teachers, sir
Maravillas and ma’am Florentino,
saying that they were her role model
and the reason why she pursued to
be a college athlete, honing her to be
the best player she could be.
Now julienne is one of the rising
stars of Cainta, winning the silver
medal at the UAAP season 86 soft-
ball.
“My message is that nothing is im-
possible if you enjoy what you do.
Just believe in yourself, because we
coached by Sir Dexter Rejang,
achieved remarkable success. They
clinched the gold in the 8 balls di-
vision, showcasing precision and
strategic play. Additionally, the team
secured a bronze in the 9 ball division,
highlighting their skill and versatility.
CSHS’s taekwondo participants show-
cased exceptional skill and determina-
tion across various weight classes. Jul-
lian Isidro, Geraldine Avecilla, Aiddran
Roy Bumalay, Khen Dustine Arizobal,
Lawrence Jamen, Cyrus Villanueva,
Hazelle Irish Sandino Nolong, and
Christine Joyce Inserto brought home
medals, with achievements ranging
from bronze to silver. Their success in
the martial arts arena added another
layer of accomplishment to CSHS’s
overall performance at the municipal
meet.
