7. In the figure, 𝐴, 𝐵 and 𝐶 are points of an amusement park on level ground,

with 𝐴 due north of 𝐵. Given that ∠𝐵𝐴𝐶 = 68°, 𝐴𝐵 = 250 m and

(i) the bearing of B from 𝐶, (ii) the length of 𝐴𝐶 and of 𝐵𝐶.

8. A boat sailed 20 km from a point 𝑃 to an island 𝑄, on a bearing of 150°.

It then sailed another 30 km on a bearing of 50° to a lighthouse 𝑅.

Find the distance and the bearing of the lighthouse from 𝑃.

9. The figure shows three towns on level ground. Given that the bearing of 𝐵

from 𝐴 is 120°, the bearing of 𝐶 from 𝐵 is 238°, 𝐴𝐵 = 35 km and 𝐵𝐶 = 55 km, find

(i) the distance between towns 𝐴 and 𝐶,

(ii) the bearing of town 𝐶 from town 𝐴.

10. The figure shows three points on level ground.

The bearing of A from C is 326°, 𝐴𝐵 = 48 m and 𝐴𝐶 = 63 m.

Calculate:

(i) the length of 𝐵𝐶,

Exercise 10 Elevation and Depression
1.Mark 𝑥 and 𝑦:

(a) Angle of depression of 𝐵 from 𝐴 is 𝑥°.

(b) Angle of depression of 𝐵 from 𝐶 is 𝑦°.

Mark 10° and 18°:

(a) Angle of elevation of 𝑃 from 𝐴 is 10°,

(b) Angle of elevation of 𝑃 from 𝐵 is 18°.

3. Two vertical poles 𝐶𝐷 and 𝐸𝐹 stand 23 m apart on horizontal ground.

The heights of the poles 𝐶𝐷 and 𝐸𝐹 are 5 m and 8 m respectively.

Calculate, in degrees to one decimal place, the angle of

depression of 𝐷 from 𝐹.

4. The diagram shows two vertical masts. 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐶𝐷,

that are 20 m apart on horizontal ground.

The height of 𝐴𝐵 is 9 m and the height of 𝐶𝐷 is 5 m.

Calculate the size of the angle of elevation,

in degrees to one decimal place of 𝐴 from 𝐶.

5. Figure shows two vertical masts 𝐴𝑃 and 𝐵𝑄. The points 𝐴 and 𝐵 are on a horizontal plane and

𝐴𝑃 = 27 m. In an experiment, a laser beam was fired from the point 𝑃 so that it hit a target at the

point 𝐵. Given that the angle of depression of the laser beam was 9.7°.

Calculate the distance, in m to the nearest m, of the point 𝐵 from:

(a) the point 𝐴,

(b) the point 𝑃.

The target was then moved from the point 𝐵 to the point 𝑄. For the laser beam to hit the target at

the point 𝑄 the angle of depression was changed to 7.2°.

(c) Calculate the vertical height, in m to the nearest m, of 𝐵𝑄.

6. A boy 1.6m tall observes that

the angle of elevation of the top of a cliff,

which is 45m away from

him, is 78°. Find the height of the cliff.

7. A girl 1.5m tall observes that the angle of elevation

of the top of a cliff 113m high is 63°.

Find the distance between her and the cliff.

8. A man on the top of a tower 118m high observes that

a house 4.5m high is 223m away from the tower.

Calculate the angles of depression

of the top and of the bottom of the house.

9. From the top of a tower of height 75m, a guard sees two prisoners,

both due east of him. If the angle of depression of the two prisoners

are 10° and 17°, calculate the distance between them.
