6.1 SIGNAGE & WAYFINDING
Strategy
Creating a Unique Identity for Jubail Island through
Wayfinding & Signage Systems.
The signage element in the landscape serves as an
opportunity for creating a unique identity that will help create
an experience for visitors at Jubail Island, from landmark
sculptures to interactive signages to elements of surprise
through design interventions in the streetscape and more.
Approach
A holistic approach to wayfinding To build an island-wide
community that has a comprehensive view, signage within
the Jubail Island public realm will have a unique style that ties
into the branding of the development and the architecture.
Signage locations will be strategically positioned to ensure
that residents and visitors can easily identify routes to the
marina, retail offerings, parks, mosques, and other open
space facilities. From a landscape and public realm point
of view, all signage elements will be logically grouped and
placed subtly within their environment, so not as to create
clutter. The use of materials and colours will complement
the furniture selection, so to present a holistic design. It will
make use of internationally recognized pictogram to ensure
legibility for all. Where explanatory text is required, this will
be in both Arabic and English.
Key Design Principles
• Signage style to utilize local material palette and materials
and draws inspiration from the natural character of the
environment to achive visual consistency throughout the
island.
• Entry signs to gateway clusters will define each residential
precinct as having a relaxed and natural look and feel. This
will be developed in accordance with the architectural
style, the degree of exclusivity and land value, as well as
the naming and marketing of each individual cluster.
• While a degree of uniqueness shall be encouraged,
all signages will link back to an overall “Jubail Island”
typology. They will all have consistent elements such as
branding logo / background pattern / colour identity /
pictogram style, determined by the Jubail brand.
• External Signage to be developed as part of a proper
wayfinding strategy, ensuring suitable placement within
the public realm. Signage elements are to be grouped
together, with preference for wall-mounting wherever
possible, so as to reduce clutter.
• Signage elements are to make use of simple, hardwearing
and durable materials that are suitable to the desert and
marine setting. Materiality is to compliment the hardscape
and furniture selection, so as to achieve a coherent public
realm appearance.
• Wayfinding maps or plinths to be provided at entrance
areas / gathering places. Where appropriate, the rear of
plinths may be considered for advertising of community
/ local retail events and functions. The size of signs and
plinths shall be proportionate to the intended use. Ease
of legibility to be considered for vehicles, pedestrians
and cyclists, with a suitable font size that can be read at
varying travel speeds and distances.
• Font size and style to be as per Signage & Wayfinding
Guidelines. The recommended English typeface is ‘Bodoni
Sans’. The recommended Arabic typeface is ‘GE Hili’.
• The use of pictogram is to be considered wherever
possible with explanatory text supplied in both Arabic and
English.
• Lighting and Braille to be considered where appropriate.
• The long-term maintenance of signage is to be
considered, especially in relation to rusting, peeling,
fading, internal lighting etc. All signage elements are
to satisfy UPC & ADM requirements for guarantees and
performance.
• Traffic, marine, fire safety and other regulatory signs to
be co-ordinated to ensure suitable placement, minimum
number of signs and smallest possible size. Statutory
signage is to satisfy DoT traffic, DoT marine and Civil
Defence safety requirements while not detracting.

Graphic Design & Content
Each sign has a kit of graphic components that can be added to or taken away from
a sign depending on the desired level of information needed for a particular sign
and it’s location.
Whilst the sign type remains the same, samples of the variants can be seen in the
Signage and Wayfinding appendices.
In areas of high footfall, information can be distributed across a variety of sign
types within the proximity. This makes the information more digestible at a glance

• The colour palette plays an important part in establishing a clear look and feel
for wayfinding in large developments. This palette is often complemented by
a set of materials to create a unique style for the brand. The colour palette will
be developed to have a clear contrast that will aid in legibility of signs both in Pattern

• Hierarchy of information is quintessential to good wayfinding. This helps users
understand large volumes of information in simple and ordered ways, organising
the scale of the development down to accessible information for effective
navigation.
• Legibility and proportion help create clear balance between different elements Jubail Island Logo
in a sign, helping bind all information together in an easily understandable
format. These principles will help make large volumes of information
aesthetically pleasing and easy to read.
