ECDIS short ans.

1. Explain the SOLAS carriage requirements for ECDIS.

A: SOLAS regulation V/19, all ships irrespective of size shall have nautical charts and nautical
publications to plan and display the ship´s route for the intended voyage and to plot and monitor
positions throughout the voyage; an electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) may
be accepted as meeting the (…) requirements.
All ships shall have backup arrangements, (2. ECDIS or paper charts)
Details for mandatory ECDIS carriage requirements see IMO MC 1.27.C1
.

2. Explain the difference between Raster- and Vector Charts?

A: Raster Charts have scanned paper charts; vector charts are constructed of several different
layers which can be displayed independently; all information is constructed of points based on a
common reference point.
3. What is the difference between ECDIS and ECS?
A: ECDIS is an ECS that fulfills all legal requirements, e.g., type-approved, minimum sensors
connected, adequate back-up arrangement, installation approved, using official charts, regular
updates, trained crew.

4. Which Sensors must be attached to an ECDIS?

A: EFPS, gyro, log.

5. Explain the term “over-reliance” with respect to ECDIS?

A: Nautical Officer must be aware of the risk of a system malfunction, unreliable hydrographic
data, unreliable sensors, errors in one subsystem that can influence the performance of other
systems, misinterpretation of data, wrong setting of parameters.

6. Please draw a picture of how a dangerous isolated danger is presented on your ECDIS screen.

7. What is the difference between Standard Display and Base Display?

A: Base Display is not allowed for navigation; it contains only coastline and some other basic
information; Standard Display contains all necessary information except depth reading.

8. What are the two primary reasons for backup arrangements in case of ECDIS failure?
A: 1. The safe takeover of ECDIS functions avoids critical conditions.
2. Safe navigation for the remaining part of the voyage

9. Explain the differences in the display of “True” and “Relative” Motion

A: In true motion, the ship moves over the display, the ship has a vector, stationary targets have
none. In relative motion the display moves, own ship is stationary. Own ship has no vector,
stationary targets have one.

10. Why is it important to adjust the Safety Contour and Safety Depth value?
A: The Safety contour based on the safety depth a major improvement of the vector charts
compared to the paper charts; it provides anti-grounding alarms

11. What is a pick report / Query?

A: Information about a displayed objects by using the appropriate “chart query” or properties
function.

12. What is the meaning of the term “CCRP”

A: Consistent Common Reference point. An imaginary point where all sensor data are
concentrated, normally the conning position
