The Laundromat: L'Affaire des Panama Papers

Introduction:
The Laundromat is an American movie released on October 2019, directed by Steven
Soderberg. The movie is available on Netflix, and It’s inspired by real events.
In this movie we can see a widow, which after having her husband's death insurance money
extorted from her, she heads all the way to Panama, where Jürgen Mossack and Ramon
Fonseca, business lawyers established in Panama are hiding money on behalf of wealthy
people .
In the meantime, the business lawyers break the "4th Wall" to explain to the spectators the
offshore system and shell companies...

First secret
"The humble are in trouble"
During a cruise Ellen Martin and her husband were victims of a shipwreck where he drowned.
The boat's insurer together with the reinsurance company, replied that they could not cover
the sinking. The insurer is United, a Nevis-based company with close ties to Mossack Fonseca
and headed by Irvin Boncamper.

Second secret
"These are just shells”
Ellen buys a superb panoramic apartment in Las Vegas. While visiting it, she discovers that
the sale is cancelled, the apartment is sold to Russians who have paid double cash. Their bank
put them in contact with Mossack Fonseca, to invest (launder…) their income by having
apartments in the United States purchased by a front company located in a tax heaven: neither
premises nor employees, but confidentiality. Ellen flies to Nieves a Caribbean island to meet
Boncamper. In front of dozens of mailboxes of phantom companies, she meets Boncamper
without knowing who he is and asks him if he knows Boncamper. He claims not to know him.
She sees him again by chance at Miami airport, where he is arrested in front of her. In
Panama, Mossack is informed of his arrest. Ellen discovers that the company buying her
apartment is Panamanian and is one of the companies created by Mossack Fonseca which is
one of all the mailboxes she saw.
Ellen tries in vain to alert the press.

Third secret
"Tell a friend"
Ramón Fonseca says he became a lawyer to help the humble, but found it easier to help
himself, helping businesses “dodging taxes.”

Fourth Secret
"The b-a-ba of bribes"
Charles, an African Mossack Fonseca client living in Los Angeles, is surprised by his
daughter having an affair with her best friend. In order to acquire her silence and avoid that
his iwife knows his double life, he proposes to sell her a company that he owns which shares
are bearer, worth 20 million dollars.

Fifth secret
"Assassinations"
Mossack and Fonseca discover with amazement the disclosure of the Panama Papers by “John
Doe”. The scandal caused the departure of several heads of government and are arrested for
their involvement in the scandal.
Leaving the studio, they meet their new "director" of companies: it's "John Doe", who takes
off his hairpieces: it's Ellen or her interpreter, Meryl Streep. Change is urgent, she says,
brandishing her hairbrush in a posture copied the Statue of Liberty.
