The biggest Vietnamese traditional festival

In Asia, many countries celebrate their festivals as an important activity in their culture. Vietnam is
not an exception, and the biggest festival that occurs every year in this country is Tet.

Tet is a very important holiday for all Vietnamese people which often takes place from the end of
January till the end of February every year. The special point is that people do not use the ordinary
calendar to count for Tet days. Instead, they use the Lunar Calendar, which is according to the
Moon, to count the exact dates. Luckily, this period of the year is in the spring season when the
weather is good enough for the festival and for people to hang out.

There are several reasons why Vietnamese celebrate this festival. The first one is that Tet marks the
end of the past year and the beginning of the New Lunar Year. Another reason is because after
working hard for a whole year, people would like to take a break and forget about their busy life for
a while. Moreover, they prefer to have some time for their family and friends.

Before the festival, what people should do is a spring cleaning which means they have to tidy their
house. During the festival, they visit their friends and relatives’ houses where they enjoy big meals
with some special food like square sticky rice cake and other delicious food. After the meals, they
often spend the rest of their time playing cards and exchanging lucky money. In addition, they also
visit pagodas in order to pray for a year of luck, success and peace. Besides, they like to walk around
the city centre for some photo shoots in nice clothes.

Most people consider this festival essential for its cultural value. Tet is a time for familial
relationships. No matter where you are, Tet is the time for you to gather with your family members.
