The Magi wore white robes and tall hats made of felt, with long side flaps that covered
their cheeks as far as the chin. They often carried divining rods (known as barsoms),
which they used to officiate sacrifices. The Magi were renowned for their study and
knowledge of astrology and astronomy. They kept detailed astronomical records
for over 360 years, which helps us understand how wise men from the East
recognized and followed the star that led them to Bethlehem many years later.

The Hebrew prophet Jeremiah said the Israelites should not fight their
enemies but go quietly into captivity in Babylonia (which later became Persia).
After seventy years, they would be allowed to return home (Jeremiah 25 & 29).
After those seventy years, the Persian conqueror of Babylonia, Cyrus the Great,
gave the Israelites permission to return to their homeland. Historians agree
that the returning Israelites left Babylonia at various times,
but many Israelites chose to stay or move elsewhere.

Myrrh is a sweet-smelling resin obtained from trees found in parts of Arabia and Africa. The resin
hardens into bead-like nuggets, which are then steam-distilled to produce an essential oil. The oil has
a clean, earthy smell with a hint of licorice, and was commonly used in ancient times for perfume,
incense, medicinal and sacred purposes. Esther used this oil to prepare herself to meet the king.
At times in history, myrrh was more valuable than gold. It is still used today in toothpaste,
mouthwashes, as an antiseptic, and medicine. Traditional uses of myrrh include treating skin wounds
and infections. When rubbed on the throat, myrrh is said to help to relieve a sore throat. Myrrh gets its
name from the Hebrew ‘murr’ or ‘maror’, which translates as ‘bitter’.

Esther Activity Book 28
The king’s gate
In the ancient Near East, the King’s Gate referred to a large building near the main palace
buildings. The phrase “King’s Gate” was a term for the palace and court, and “those of the
Gate” was a type of court title. Royal gateways were places where people could go to talk to
the king, or hear his judgments. The book of Esther records that the king’s servants plotted
at the king’s gate to murder him. Mordecai heard the plot and reported it to Esther, who
gave the news to the king (Esther 2:19-23).
At the ancient Persian city of Persepolis, the King’s Gate was a place where petitioners
waited to meet with the king. They were questioned by security guards here and then
admitted into the courtyard. Messengers sent messages back and forth between the
courtyard and the audience hall where the king received guests. In the late 1800s,
a French archaeologist unearthed ruins of the palace
at Susa after it had been buried for more than 2,000 years.

A Persian Home
The average house in Persia was a small, one-story, mud-brick structure, consisting of several
rooms grouped around a court. However, the houses of wealthy Persians were much bigger –
usually a two-story brick dwelling of about a dozen rooms plastered and whitewashed both inside
and out. The ground floor consisted of a reception room, kitchen, lavatory, servants’ quarters,
and sometimes even a private chapel. Furniture included low tables, high-backed chairs, and
beds with wooden frames. Household utensils were made of clay, stone, copper, and bronze, and
baskets and chests were made of reed and wood. Floors and walls were adorned with reed mats,
skin rugs, and woolen hangings.
Below the house was often a mausoleum where dead family members were buried. Persians
believed the souls of the dead traveled to the nether world, and that life continued there as on
earth. For this reason, pots, tools, weapons, and jewels were buried with each family member.

In ancient Persian language, the word Purim means “lots.” The holiday was named
Purim since Haman had thrown lots to determine when he would carry out his
wicked plan. In Eastern tradition, it is called poo-REEM. Among Westerners, it is often called
PUH-rim. During this time, children often send their friends gifts of food like fruits and sweets.
Traditionally, a sweet triangular pastry known as called Hamantaschen (Haman’s pockets) or
Oznei Haman (Haman’s ears) is eaten. Acts of charity, such as giving money to people in
need or to your favorite charity, is encouraged. Families often hold a festive meal on
Purim afternoon where they singsongs, tell the story of Purim, and have a fun time.
