King Solomon
King Solomon’s main project while he was king was to build a temple in Jerusalem. Building
the temple was such a big project that it took seven years to finish. Solomon’s father David had
already stored a massive amount of gold, silver, iron, timber and stone for the job. However, God
did not allow David to build the temple during his lifetime. “You have been a man of war,” said
God. “I want a man of peace.”
As soon as King Hiram of Tyre (a city state of Phoenicia) heard David had died, he sent ambassadors
to Solomon to ensure that he stayed friends with the new king. Solomon wanted a close
relationship with the Phoenicians, too. So, the kings pooled their resources to build the temple.
Hiram provided as many cedar logs as Solomon needed. In return, Solomon sent wheat and pure
olive oil to help the king feed his men.
Because building the temple was such a big job, Solomon organized a peacetime draft to find
enough men. As many as 30,000 Israelites (divided into three monthly shifts) were sent to work
in Phoenicia to cut the timber needed to build the temple. Massive rafts were built to float the
logs to Israel via the Mediterranean Sea. Meanwhile, Phoenician craftsmen worked side-by-side
with the Israelites at the temple site in Jerusalem. While the temple was the main
project, many other buildings were built to support temple activities, including the
treasury buildings, granaries, livestock holding pens for sacrifices, and housing for
the priests. After the temple was finished, the Israelites and Phoenicians worked
for another thirteen years to build Solomon’s palace (I Kings 7:1, 2 Chronicles 8:1).
(To learn how Solomon built the temple in more detail, read Steven M. Collins book:

Phoenicia was a Semitic civilization located on the coastline of modern Lebanon and Syria. Between
1500 BC and 300 BC, the Phoenicians were the world’s most advanced sailors and traders. They based
themselves in cities such as Tyre and Sidon, and sailed across the Mediterranean, Atlantic, Red Sea, and
Indian Ocean to trade with other nations and cultures. The historian Josephus wrote that their ships
weighed up to 6,500 tons and were able to carry up to 600 passengers with cargo.
Some historians believe the Phoenicians discovered North America many years before
Christopher Columbus. They point to the discovery of Paleo-Hebrew writing (including
the Ten Commandments), ancient copper mines, old religious shrines, and evidence of
Hebrew culture amongst North American Indians as proof of the Phoenicians’ early
influence. For example, on Monhegan Island, ten miles off the coast of Maine, one
inscription written in Celtic Ogam, reads “Cargo platforms for ships from Phoenicia.”
From these and other inscriptions, as well as historical data on the Phoenicians’
sailing ability, these historians conclude there was a highly developed trade
route between America and the Mediterranean years before the birth of Christ.

The strangest thing I saw was...
When Solomon and the Phoenicians built a fleet of ships at Ezion-geber on the Red Sea, the
king sent his fleets eastward toward the Indian Ocean and westward toward the Atlantic
Ocean and North America through Egypt’s ‘canal’. This canal linked the Nile river to the Red
Sea. Some historians believe this canal was 100 miles long, 30-40 yards wide, and would have
taken at least four days to navigate!
These joint Israelite – Phoenician explorations probably reached their peak during the reign of
Solomon due to one main reason; under Solomon the main Mediterranean powers were allied
together. Their enemy (Assyria) had been ‘taken out’ by King David in his
battle with Assyria and the Mesopotamian powers. So, with great
power and no real enemies to challenge them, the Israelites,
Phoenicians, and Egyptians devoted their resources to
worldwide exploration and empire building.
