second term of college said I should drop out because of how much I liked Shooting an Elephant.
When he decided to sent for the elephant rifle the crowd assumed that he was going to shoot the
elephant. However, Orwell himself was British, and in his role as a police officer he was part of the
oppression he is speaking against. The sheer pettiness of the “evil spirited little beasts”, their
cumulative bitterness making it impossible for him to help them, led to a feeling that it “would be the
greatest joy in the world” to “drive a bayonet into a Buddhist Priest’s guts”. One day he got news of
an elephant ravishing the bazaar and goes there to see what he can do about it. We must understand
that the person who shot the elephant was the young Orwell, a person who was caught in a

get its remaining outposts of empire to become independent since the mid-80s. It had already
destroyed somebody’s bamboo hut, killed a cow and raided some fruit-stalls and devoured the stock;
