4 Introduction
Chapter 2: Upgrade and
Maintenance

New System
A new system is shipped with the Controller software installed, including software for special
features, such as ConCAD and vision capability. If any features require licensing, the licensing
software is installed, and the features are licensed. The system needs only to be integrated into
the customer’s domain.

Integrate with the Customer’s Domain

The product installation package creates a local Windows user account with elevated privileges
called Maxsys. This user account is applied to the Datacard Maxsys Windows Service.

This provides a reasonable default, to conform to site-specific standards. Refer to the Data
Security Standards and Implementation Guide for information about setting up a domain user.

Update the CIS Controller Software

Use the following procedure to update the CIS Controller software, and/or to install the licensing
software that is required for some features. This procedure can also be used for installing the
Controller software on a Controller computer that is replaced in the field.

1. Power on the system Controller computer.

Leave power to the modules off during the software installation or

upgrade. Power to the modules is controlled by the red switch on the
Controller module. If you have the modules powered on during the
installation, you must power them off and on again after restarting the

10 Upgrade and Maintenance

Back Up and Restore the System
When the software installation is complete, prepare a backup of the hard drive(s) so that
recovery is possible. Back up the hard drive(s) again if you change or add more software, or
modify the setups on the drive. New systems ship with a DVD that contains Acronis software to
complete the backup.

 Back up any partition or drive that contains the database.

 Make sure that you use the Acronis True Image OEM Edition DVD that shipped
with the system. Do not use an earlier version of Acronis.

Before you begin a backup, make sure that the system is as clean as possible. Purge any event
logs or trace files to lower the size of the image and decrease the time needed to back up and
restore. If there is data that is not needed by you or the customer, clear it out as described below.

For security reasons, do not make a backup of the system with customer data
loaded, unless requested to do so by the customer.

Clear Out Production, Trace, and Event Data

If you want to clear out only production data, use the Clear Production Data option
in the Controller Diagnostics.

Use the following procedure to clear out production, trace, and event data before a backup:

1. Log on as a user with database administration rights (the Maxsys service user is a good
choice).

2. Open C:\PostgreSQL\9.3\utilities\RecreateDB.cmd.

Software Upgrade and Maintenance Guide 11

Create the Backup
If the system is completely clean, the backup takes 10 to 20 minutes. If the system has a large
database and you did not clear out production data, the backup could take several hours.

If you are using a large external USB drive (500 GB), do not plug in the drive yet.

1. Start the system with the Acronis True Image OEM Edition DVD, and click Acronis True Image.

2. If you are using a large external USB drive, plug it in now.

3. Click Backup, and then click Disk and Partition Backup.

4. For partitions, click in the box for Disk 1 to select all partitions on that disk, and then click
Next.

5. To create a name and location for the archive file, follow the steps below:
a. Browse to the USB destination drive. Highlight the drive to place the cursor in the File
Name box. The drive letter displays in the box.
b. Enter a name for the file. It is recommended that you use the machine serial number,
such as <Mx8100188.tib>. If you are backing up a system with multiple drives, include
that in the file name. If there are multiple drives in the system, use a name that identifies
what drive the image is for, such as <Mx8100C.tib> for the C: drive and <Mx8100188_
D.tib> for the D: drive.

c. Click OK.

d. Click Next.

6. At the Summary screen, verify that everything is correct and then click Proceed.

7. If the system has more than one drive, back up the next drive.

8. When the backup is complete, click OK.

9. When the system restoration is complete, remove the Acronis boot disc from the drive, close
the Acronis software, and unplug the USB external drive.

12 Upgrade and Maintenance

Restore the System
This process can be used to restore the system from a DVD provided by Entrust Datacard with the
new system, or from a more recent backup.

If the backup image was from a clean system, the restore should take 15 to 20 minutes. If the
image contains data, it could take several hours.

If you are using a large external USB drive (500 GB), do not plug in the drive yet.

1. Restart the system with the Acronis True Image OEM Edition DVD, and click Acronis True
Image.
2. If you are using a large external USB drive, plug it in now.

3. To restore the backup image files, select Recover My Disks.

4. Browse to the drive where your files reside and select the image file for the machine and
hard drive that you are restoring. Click Next.

Make sure that you select the correct image file for this system. Do not use a
backup file from another system. System licenses and production counts would
be affected.

5. For recovery method, select Recover whole disks or partitions, and then click to select
Change size of disk or partition. Then, click Next.

6. For partition or disk restore, select Disk 1 to include both the NTFS (Drive C) and the MBR and
Track 0 information. Click Next.

7. For the restored hard drive location, select the drive that you want to restore to, and click
Next.

8. If the confirmation dialog box displays, click OK (to delete existing information or partitions).

9. On the restoration method dialog box, click Copy partitions without changes.

10. Confirm that the information is correct, and then click Proceed.

11. Optionally, select Restart, or Shut down the computer after operation.

12. When the system restoration is complete, remove the Acronis boot disc from the drive, close
the Acronis software, and unplug the USB external drive.

Windows security credentials are not recovered. Refer to the Data Security Standards
and Implementation Guide for information about adding a domain user.

Appendix A: For Controllers
Using SCS

For Controller computers using SCS and a DB2 database.

Run the Computer Rename Script

After a computer name change you must run a script to adjust the registry settings. The database
does not run without the correct registry settings. To run the script after a computer name
change, follow the steps below:

1. Locate the db2_rename.cmd script. The file is in the C:/<Product Name>/bin or it can be
downloaded from www.partnerpage.com.

2. Copy the script to the root directory.

3. To run the script, open a Windows command window and enter db2_rename
<NewSystemName>.

4. Restart the Controller computer.

Reconfigure Syntera CS to Use SQL Server

This section contains the process to reconfigure Syntera Customization Suite (CS) to use SQL
Server for the database rather than DB2. This process is for customers who do not want to
continue to use DB2 with Syntera CS software.

The process described in this document does not migrate any data from DB2 to SQL
Server. For most Syntera CS software (Hosted Smart Card, Data Access, Job Enable or
Open Perso) users, there is no critical data in the database, and this process is suitable.
However, if you are a user of Datacard® Affina® MULTOS™ Issuance Software, then the
database likely contains information that is important to retain. Contact Datacard for a
consultation if you are an Affina MULTOS issuance software user, if you have other critical
data you need to retain, or if you have questions/concerns about this.

Follow the steps below to reconfigure Syntera CS software to use SQL Server.

Software Upgrade and Maintenance Guide A-1

Step 1: Install SQL Server
Syntera CS software supports SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2008 R2, both Express and non-
Express editions. The Express versions can be used free of charge and are suitable for most users.
SQL Server Express installation programs are available on the Syntera CS installation disc.

The SQL Server Express database can be no larger than 10 GB. High-volume installations
or installations that must store a large amount of data for each record require SQL Server.
This includes, for example, Affina MULTOS issuance software users.

If you have Datacard® Affina® Profiles and Scripting software installed on the Controller
computer, you may already have SQL Server installed. In that case, you need only confirm
that mixed mode authentication is enabled.

To install the database, follow the steps described in the “Installing the Database” section of the
Datacard Syntera Customization Suite Foundation Software Installation and Configuration Guide
(Part No. 539768-001).

Step 2: Stop the Syntera CS Services

Follow the steps below to stop the Syntera CS Services.

1. Make sure that production is stopped.

2. Select Start > Programs > Datacard > Syntera Customization Suite > Configuration to open
Syntera CS Configuration.

A-2
3. Log on to Configuration.

4. Under Server Status select Start/Stop Services and then select Stop Services.

5. When the services have stopped, log off of Configuration.

Step 3: Remove the Existing System Data Source

Follow the steps below to remove or rename the existing Syntera CS DSN (data source name).
1. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder.

2. Click odbcad32.exe to start the ODBC Data Source Administrator application.

3. Select the System DSN tab and locate the ObjectServer20_SQL entry.

4. Select Remove to delete the ObjectServer20_SQL DSN, or select Configure and rename it.

Software Upgrade and Maintenance Guide A-3

Step 4: Create the Syntera CS Database
Follow the steps below to create the Syntera CS database.

1. Select Start > Programs > Datacard > Syntera Customization Suite > Configuration to access
Syntera CS Configuration.

2. Log on to Configuration.

3. Under Configuration Options select Database.

4. Follow the steps described in the “Create a Database” section of the Datacard Syntera
Customization Suite Foundation Software Installation and Configuration Guide (Part No.
539768-001).

5. Under Server Status select Start/Stop Services and then select Start Services.

Uninstall Process for DB2

This process requires the user have local administrator rights. If a Syntera Customization Suite
server is running on this system, make sure that it is not using DB2 for its database. If Syntera CS
is configured to use DB2 you are not able to uninstall DB2 until/unless SCS is changed to use a
different database server. Refer to “Reconfigure Syntera CS to Use SQL Server” on page A-1 for
the steps to take to use SQL server.

1. Open the Services application and stop the service that the system uses to run (the default is
Maxsys). Find the service in the list, right-click and then select Stop or click Stop in the dialog
box.
