KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HIV AND DISCRIMINATORY ATTITUDES TOWARD

PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV IN PAKISTAN

Abstract:

There is not much data on public opinion towards PLHIV in Pakistan or HIV awareness in the general
population. In order to assess the impact of HIV knowledge on discriminatory attitudes towards PLHIV in
Pakistan and investigate their correlation with socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, a
secondary analysis of data from the PDHS 2012–13 was conducted.

The research included all married individuals between the ages of 15 and 49 who had ever heard of AIDS.
For analysis, three groups of variables reflecting the discriminating attitude and composite knowledge
were created and recorded.

The findings imply that in order to lessen HIV stigma and prevent discriminatory attitudes, Pakistani
society has to learn more about HIV/AIDS.
