STEP 1 Identify appropriate ballast water exchange locations

STEP 2 Undertake ballast water exchange

STEP 3 Check legislative requirements at port

STEP 4 Check reporting requirements for local port

STEP 5 If required, send advance warning of any compliance issues to port state control

Before Arrival:

STEP 1 Ballast water management plan onboard

STEP 2 Record dates of vessel’s last drydocking

STEP 3 BWMS installation drawings & documents

STEP 4 Ballast water record book updated

If vessel has a BWMS installed:

STEP 1 Certificate of USCG approved BWMS

STEP 2 AMS Certification of BWMS (if applicable)

If vessel does not have a BWMS installed:

STEP 1 Copy of USCG extension letter

STEP 2 Formal receipts / documentation if vessel is using an “alternative” method of compliance

Suggested Familiarity:

STEP 1 Scheduled drydocking dates of vessel

STEP 2 Current certification expiry dates, including USCG extension (if applicable)

STEP 3 BWMS technology installed & operational limits

STEP 4 Contingency plans

STEP 5 BWMS treatment capacity
