Activity Title : Refraction of Light (Magic Pencil)
Learning Target : Describe how the propagation of light and refraction explained by the wave
model and the particle model of light.

Refraction
 Refraction is the bending of light. There is a change of direction

when the particles of light travel into other medium. See table. Air 1.000

 The incident ray, refracted ray, and the normal to the
interface of two media at the point of incidence all lie on the same plane.
 The ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of normal

the angle of refraction is always equal.

change the angle of its travel. Once light is within the new medium with
constant properties, it travels in a straight line again. See figure 1. Figure 1

Perform the activity entitled “Magic Pencil” and answer the guide questions.
Materials Needed:
Pencil, cooking oil, Glass, Water
Methods
1. Fill a glass half with water and half with oil.
2. Lower the pencil in the water, then slowly rotate it until it looks broken from the side.
3. Draw what did you observe.

Guide questions:
1. What did you observe from your experiment?

2. Why a pencil will look broken when placed in oil and water.

Application:
You and your friends were standing in the shore of a lake. You spot a tasty fish swimming
some distance below the lake surface. If you want to spear the fish, should you aim the spear (a)
above (b) Below or (c) Directly at the apparent position of the fish? Elaborate your answer by giving a
solid reason and show an illustration.
