taken by Burch to return him to Washington. Northup then discovered that Ray escaped slavery and found
his freedom somewhere in Canada.

His new name was “Platt”

The price for Platt was $1,000 and Eliza’s price was around $700.
9. What do you think is the reason why Northup was beaten by James Burch?

Because James Burch is a slaver. He does all bad things to people who isn’t a freeman. When
Solomon told James that he was a freeman before he came to Washington, James Burch beats him to
make Solomon realized that his life is no longer the same and that Solomon should accept the fact that he
is now a slave.

10. Why won't Freeman sell Eliza's daughter Emily to Ford?

Because it seems that the Freeman saw a potential on Emily, he thought that if Emily is older, and
more beautiful, she could cost more money.
