SAST: Initial Research

Pirate’s Initiation by Rachel Bronson

Where and when is this play set?
 The play takes place on a pirate ship in the middle of an ocean.
 There is no specified time period, but historically The Golden Age of Piracy spanned the
period of 1650-1726. While this play is clearly not rooted in reality, I think the general
sense/look of piracy during that time period is what the playwright was after.

Who are the characters?
 Craig:
o A small 17-year-old who longs to become an official member of the pirate crew
he’s been working for as a deck hand.
 Amberly:
o A 19-year-old competitive woman who wants to become a pirate “on this side of
the sea.”
 Captain Sketch:
o A 34-year-old man who is captain of the pirate ship. He’s loud and chaotic, yet
oddly likeable.
What happens in the play?
 Captain Sketch decides to hold a pirate competition in order to find someone to join the
crew for when he eventually retires. The competitors for this competition are Craig, a
small boy who longs to be a pirate, and Amberly, a strong competitive woman who has
an equally strong desire to become a pirate. They fight against one another for their spot
on the pirate crew in a series of hilarious competitions. Ultimately, Captain Sketch
decides that they are both worthy to join the crew, and they become pirates in training.
What is the play about?
 This play has a strong message of working together in order to overcome challenges that
individually we wouldn’t be able to overcome.
 Another theme in this play is reaching for your dreams no matter what challenges you
might face. Craig and Amberly aren’t your average pirate candidates, and face challenges
on the road to piracy. Despite those challenges they still strived to achieve their dreams to
be pirates, and ultimately succeed because of their hard work and passion.
