introduction

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at


Sea (SOLAS) is an international treaty that sets out
regulations for the construction and operation of
ships to improve maritime safety. The convention was
adopted in 1974 by the International Maritime
Organization (IMO) and has been amended several
times since then.

This chapter sets out the general


provisions of the SOLAS convention,
including the definitions of terms,
the obligations of contracting
governments, and the procedure for
amending the convention.
