WRITING ARTICLES (140-190 words)

What's the PURPOSE of an article?

To give an opinion
To entertain the readers

It's an INFORMAL text, so you can...

Use phrasal verbs
Use contractions
Use extreme adjectives. For example, instead of
saying "good", you can say FANTASTIC or
INCREDIBLE.

What's the FORMAT of an article?

TITLE

It should be connected with what you have

written.
It should call the reader's attention, so try to think
of an interesting one.
You can use an idiom or a rhetorical question as a
title.
Paragraph 1: INTRODUCTION
It's a general idea of what your text is about.
DON'T answer the questions yet.
DON'T start the introduction with "in this article, I will talk
about...." (see the example on page 3).
You can use a rhetorical question. These are questions for
the readers to think about the topic you're writing about
(see example on p. 3).
Paragraphs 2/3: ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS
You should answer the questions in the article in one or two
paragraphs.
Try to connect ideas using CONNECTORS. Don't answer the
questions one by one (see example on page 3).

Here are some connectors you can use:

add ideas: IN ADDITION, ... / ALSO, ... / MOREOVER, ...
make contrasts: HOWEVER, ... / ON THE OTHER HAND, ... / BUT ....
give examples: FOR EXAMPLE, .... / ...., LIKE .... / SUCH AS ...

Paragraph 3/4: CONCLUSION

In this part, you should make a reflection about what

you've written.
Adress your reader! Invite them to reflect on what you've
written.
You can ask a rhetorical question or recommend
something. (see example on page 3)
To start your conclusion, use connectors like ALL IN ALL, IN
CONCLUSION, TO CONCLUDE, TO SUM UP.
SAMPLE ANSWER
Procrastination: how could we stay away from it?

I'm sure everyone would agree that we have all been victims of
procrastination at some point in our lives. Sometimes we don’t have the
ability to organise ourselves to reach every single deadline we should, and
we end up being stressed and anxious. But what if I told you that there are
ways in which we could avoid procrastinating and get rid of those negative
feelings once and for all?

First of all, I’d suggest dividing tasks into shorter or less demanding ones.
For example, if you had to write an article in one week, you could devote
short periods of time per day to outline your ideas. Then, put the final
product away to check it later. In this way, you avoid writing everything in
just a couple of hours, and feeling overwhelmed along the process.

Journaling is another activity that can help us cope with negative feelings.
Procrastinating isn’t always a synonym of being lazy. In this sense,
journaling is a powerful process to both identify what’s preventing us from
being responsible and make deeper reflections on our mental health.

All in all, it’s not easy to escape procrastination, but there’s always a
solution to it. So, if I were you, I’d have this advice in mind. It can change
your life for good!
