STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

What are the negative effects of Trini-Bad music on students of Forms 3 - 5 at Holy Faith

Convent Penal?

2|Page
REASON FOR SELECTING AREA OF RESEARCH

“Concerns have been increasing about the negative influence of Trini-Bad music, with

the authorities in some Caribbean islands banning artistes from performing”. This quote from a

CNC3 article perfectly encapsulated why our group chose this topic. This music has influenced

many students to act in a manner to imitate those they have seen online that participate in

activities that Trini-Bad music promotes. By researching this topic, hopefully the group can raise

awareness of the negative impacts’ music has on teenagers.

METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

To conduct our investigation, we used a digital online questionnaire using the application

Google Forms. This is helpful for the numerous reasons below:

1. Since there is no printing involved, using a digital questionnaire rather than a physical

one will save money due to it being free to create a digital questionnaire.

2. Since there is no need to get up and look for others to complete a physical questionnaire,

it will be less time consuming.

3. Using a digital questionnaire will reach a wider audience.

PROCEDURES FOR DATA COLLECTION

Using Google Forms, we composed 25 questions for students to answer. The form was sent

out to twenty students in Forms 3-5 at Holy Faith Convent Penal.

10 | P a g e
During the August vacation, the questionnaire was administered and sent to students via

WhatsApp through an online link. The students were then informed that they had one week to

submit their answers and that all respondents were guaranteed full confidentiality.

ADJUST THE FOLLOWING AND USE

A questionnaire with 18 questions was constructed on google forms. On Tuesday 20 th June

2023 twenty (20) questionnaires were administered to residents of Circular Drive, Pleasantville.

The sample was chosen by all the youths who were 13 to 17 years old.

During the weekend, I went to the residents of Circular Drive, Pleasantville and got the

phone numbers of people willing to participate. Assurance was given to them that their data

would be kept confidential.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

In Figure 1, 50% the students strongly agreed with statement “Trini-Bad music has a

significant negative influence on young people's behavior" while 40% just agreed. The

remaining 10% felt neutral. This may be a result of all students believing that Trini-Bad music

has no positive impact on the youths as seen in the responses in question 6.

Figure 2 is 70% of the students voted that they curse more often, 15% of students showed

violence against others, 10% participated in smoking and 5% drank. This shows that students

moral values are corrupted by Trini-Bad music one way or another. This can be caused by Trini-

Bad music depicting all these actions in lyrics and music videos and students being unable to

escape from them as it is played constantly through the mass media

Figure 3 is represented by a column chart displaying the results of appropriate ways of

dealing with the negative impact of Trini-Bad music. 35% of the students who participated

believed that education should be done in schools about the negative influences of music 25%

voted for increased parental involvement while another 25% of students voted for censorship in

the mass media. However, the remaining 15% believe the artist should censor the music. There is

a possibility that many young people are not aware of the negative influences Trini-Bad has. This

is evident from the fact that most students voted in favor of education in schools. Students can

receive important information in schools regarding the detrimental effects of several musical

genres in addition to Trini-Bad music. By doing this, students affected by the negative impacts of

Trini-Bad music can improve their behavior.

According to an article published by the Daily Express, TITLE AND AUTHOR? Trini-

Bad music influences on the youth has wider societal effects. These ramifications lead to fear,

15 | P a g e
disrupt togetherness in community and strain healthcare and law enforcement resources. Even

more concerning, is the possibility of creating a generational cycle where violence is normalized

which in return, can affect future generations. This evidence further solidifies the point of Trini-

Bad music having a negative impact on the youths of today.

16 | P a g e
RECOMMENDATIONS AND IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES

To decrease the negative impacts of Trin-Bad music, government should put legislations

in place that restrict or completely ban Trini-Bad music from playing on radios and in public

spaces. By implementing these laws, students would not be exposed to the music frequently

unless they decide to listen to it on their own.

To ensure students are fully aware of the negative impacts of Trini-Bad music, schools

should host awareness campaigns about the effects of violent music. The Ministry of Education

should also go on press tours that speaks about the issues that arise from following a life of crime

due to negative influences. Students sometimes need guidance and by doing this, they become

more aware of what to lifestyle they should follow.

STATEMENT OF FINDINGS

1. In Figure 1, more than 90% of students agreed with the statement that Trini-bad music

has a major negative influence on young people’s behavior, with 50% strongly agreeing.

2. Figure 2 illustrates that there are several negative implications of dancehall music

inclusive of use of obscenities (70%), becoming more violent (15%), smoking (10%) and

drinking (5%)

3. In Figure 3, respondents identified ways of dealing with the negative impacts of

dancehall music with the majority (35%) indicating that the effects should be taught in

schools. Some believing in censorship in the media (25%), increased parental

involvement (25%) and the minority believing in censorship by the artist (15%)
