Listening Strategy

Part B
STRATEGY B1:
ANTICIPATE
THE TOPIC
Overview

In Listening Part B, it will be helpful if you know the topics.

Therefore, you should try to anticipate the topics. It can be
about school, trip, campus, etc. A useful strategy is by
skimming the answers in the test book before listening to the
conversations on the tape, then try to determine the topics of
the conversations you will listen to.
Try it!
Look at the answers, then try to anticipate the topics of the conversations. Even if you cannot
determine the topics, you can get a general idea about the conversations.
1. (a) find a book in the library
(b) do Exercise 5 for homework
(c) ask the woman about the task
(d) finish the homework assigned
2. (a) in a library
(b) in the classroom
(c) in the campus office
(d) in a canteen

3. (a) on Tuesday
(b) in the morning
(c) tomorrow
(d) yesterday

What is the topic of the conversation for question 1 to 3

if you see the options?
STRATEGY B2:
ANTICIPATE
THE
QUESTIONS
Overview

This strategy will be very helpful when we are doing listening

part B. We need to be able to anticipate what questions will
appear in the audio recording. In the test book, we only see
the answers that can help us predict what questions will arise.
Accordingly, it will be easy to find the right answer quickly.
Example
In your test book, you read:
(a) on Tuesday, at 8 a.m.
(b) on Thursday, at 8 a.m.
(c) on Tuesday, at 8 p.m.
(d) on Thursday, at 8 p.m.

You try to anticipate the question:

When will the event be held?
Discussion: In this example, we can predict that the possible question
that may arise is when the event will be held by looking at the options
in the test book. If the options are about day and hour, we can predict
that the question appearing will be about “when”. This will help us
determine the correct answer by paying attention to specific
information about day and time in a long conversation.
STRATEGY B3:
DETERMINE
THE TOPICS
Overview

The topic of listening Part B usually appears in the first part of

the conversation. Therefore, while you are listening to the first
part, you should ask and think about what the topic is.
Look at the example below.
Example
On the recording, you will hear:
(man) : You can’t believe what I got for my
birthday present!
(woman) : I bet you got that concert ticket
you have dreamed of.
(man) : Yes, how do you know that?

You think:
The topic of the conversation is the concert
ticket that the man got for his birthday
present.
Discussion: In the conversation above, the key words are provided in
the first and second lines, namely birthday present and concert
ticket.
